Summary
This is work involving the supervision of students in assigned areas - inside and outside the school. Providing a high level of visibility, the Supervision Assistant monitors the activities of students to ensure their safety, well-being, and conformance to the school's standards of acceptable behaviour. Working with students in a positive, pro-active manner, the supervision assistant works within guidelines and procedures established by the school's Principal or designate, to whom any difficult problems or concerns are referred. Discretion must be exercised by the Supervision Assistant when dealing with student matters of a confidential nature.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Observes student behaviour and interacts when necessary to maintain established discipline standards and guidelines, and student safety
Maintains a high visibility among students
When necessary, directs students to the Principal, as per established guidelines for dealing with disputes
Comforts and assists children who have injured themselves by providing basic first aid, or call for appropriate assistance
Provides information to the Principal on incidents, and in some situations, completes incident report on serious infractions
Approaches strangers on or around playground to ascertain identity
Performs other related duties as may reasonably be expected of a person in this position
Required Qualifications:
Basic First Aid Ticket, or willingness to obtain within 6 months
Required Experience:
Previous experience working with or supervising children
Required Skills and Abilities:
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Enjoy working with children, with an interest in their well-being
Ability to maintain good working relationships with school staff and students
Ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential matters
Ability to work within guidelines established by the Principal for student behaviour, exercising patience and firmness as required
Physically capable of performing the job duties and working outdoors
