JOB DESCRIPTION

GROUNDS & FIELDS WORKER (FULL-TIME)

Shawnigan Lake School is seeking a Grounds & Fields Worker to join our team in supporting the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the grounds and fields facilities at the School.

The right candidate for this position is someone who is committed to ensuring their work is performed safely and to a high standard, is a great team player who also enjoys working independently and is able to remain flexible as the needs of School property change over time. There will be frequent lifting of materials weighing up to 50 pounds, and this position takes place outdoors, year-round. This role will require work schedule flexibility including seasonal on-call hours.

This is a full-time, year-round position offering a salary range of $49,751 to $51,243 per annum, plus a full benefits package, an RRSP with employer-matched contributions, paid vacation, a flexible work environment, and a nurturing, family-friendly workplace.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Grounds and Fields Supervisor, the tasks of the Grounds & Fields Worker include, but are not limited to:

Gardening and maintenance activities such as planting, weeding, mowing, and pruning

Working with team members in maintaining formal gardens, trails, and natural areas

May remove shrubs and trees

Sow grass and renovate turf areas; may apply herbicides to lawn.

Pick up and/or deliver equipment and supplies

Perform irrigation maintenance, adjustments, and repairs during growing season

Assist with regular hardscape maintenance of walkways, fencing, walls, gates, water features, outdoor lighting, and other features

Assist with spring and fall clean-up of leaves and debris from beds, turf, and hardscape

Assist with plant health care activities including mulching, planting, deadheading, and supplemental watering

Assist with snow and ice removal

Assist with set-up and take-down for events on the grounds

Clean gutters. Repair gutters if possible

Clean roofs of moss and other debris

Assists in maintenance of athletic fields (natural grass and synthetic surfaces)

Perform turf maintenance including mowing, edging and trim work

Field markings and logo painting

Clean equipment that has been used and report any deficiencies

Other related duties as required

REQUIREMENTS

Valid class 5 driving license

Knowledge of sport field maintenance

Demonstrable experience working with grounds and turf or landscape maintenance and irrigation

Knowledge of landscaping / grounds work and use of landscaping equipment (power tools; lawnmowers; weed eaters, power washer etc.)

Handyperson skills including basic trouble-shooting of equipment, light painting, woodwork and snow shoveling

A strong ability to recognize plant healthcare needs and problems

Physical capacity to lift and carry 50-lbs; stand, walk, squat for extended periods of time

Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions

High level of reliability and timeliness

Self-motivated and independent, with a proven ability to work with minimal supervision
