Int. Network Specialist to analyze and transition users and devices from Cisco to Aruba with a Higher Education client

Duration: 6 months (July - Dec 2024, with chance of extension)

Location: Kingston, ON (1x/month Hybrid)

Must haves:

  • 3-5+ years of experience as a Network Specialist, Network Analyst, or Network Designer
  • 2+ years of experience leading/supporting a user migration project
  • Understanding of TCP/IP protocol and Layer 2/Layer 3 networking
  • Experience using R-studio (or equivalent) to extract and collate large amounts of data from Excel files

Nice to haves:

  • Previous experience in a University/College/Municipality
  • Previous experience migrating users from Cisco to HPE Aruba


Job Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure Services, the Network Specialist, User Transition (SME) will work as part of the NGN Transition Team. The Transition team is responsible for migrating all user and infrastructure devices from the existing Cisco network to the Aruba NGN network.

The SME will work within the scope of each wave, and will:

  • Identify and classify all active network assets on the campus network; identify device type, potential device owner, and complexity of migration (simple move, co-ordinated move, or complex move) e.g.
  • 1st Pass analysis - identify all devices on the network and categorize into User or Infrastructure device group
  • 2nd Pass analysis - sort the user devices in to focus groups, e.g.:
  • Desktop computers (Windows and Mac), categorize by dhcp, dhcp reserved and static
  • Other User devices, sorted by dhcp status, e.g.:
  • DHCP public IP - sort by device type, vlan/owner
  • DHCP private IP - sort by device type, vlan/owner
  • Static IP - sort by vlan/owner
  • 3rd Pass analysis - create targeted user device lists for the project to co-ordinate the device moves to the NGN network.
  • Close-Out analysis - confirmation user devices moved to the correct vlan and network switchport.
  • Identify where multiple devices are attached to a single switchport e.g. identify potential user-deployed sub-switches and routers. Develop a remediation plan, using approved project guidelines.
  • Develop a vlan migration plan; identify active vlans in each building, map to NGN vlan and identify special uses-cases.
  • Assist with user device migration planning; to be executed by the operations and project staff.
  • Support post-migration validation and issue resolution.
