POSITION DESCRIPTION:
ELEMENTARY PE TEACHER (TEMPORARY, FULL-TIME, MATERNITY LEAVE COVERAGE)
We invite applications for a temporary, full-time (Maternity Leave Coverage) PE Teacher position commencing December 2, 2024 and ending on December 19, 2025. This position includes co-teaching PE to Kindergarten and Grade 1 classes, teaching Grade 4 and 5 PE classes, and a Grade 5 Homeroom partnership responsibility.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
PYP specialist-subject teachers proactively consider and nurture students’ cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. They collaboratively design, implement, and assess grade-level teaching and learning in their subject speciality across the PYP continuum, guided by the BC Curriculum and the philosophy and framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). They value opportunities to interact and build caring relationships with students in and beyond the classroom. They work closely and collaboratively with administrators, coordinators and other school leaders, teachers, non-teaching staff, and families to co-create a positive and inclusive school environment and climate. They embrace and uphold the Southridge vision, mission, and values.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop respectful and caring relationships with students in and beyond the classroom to nurture their belonging, safety, and connection within the school community
Guide students’ cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development
Actively implement the IB Approaches to Teaching (ATT), IB Approaches to Learning (ATL), and the IB Learner Profile through inquiry, conceptual understanding, and subject-specific and transdisciplinary teaching and learning
Use standards-based grading and reporting to communicate each student’s continuous development of essential skills and subject-specific learning standards, focusing on providing feedback and feedforward that highlights each student’s strengths, areas for improvement, and next steps
Support age-appropriate development of student agency and efficacy
Guide student behaviour choices that align with the Junior School Promise and Southridge values
Use technology to enhance learning and teaching and ensure students understand expectations for mindful, age-appropriate use of technology as a learning tool
Develop and sustain respectful and professional relationships with colleagues through ongoing collaboration, inquiry, dialogue, and reflection
Document curriculum planning and reflection using school-based systems to fully meet IB PYP requirements
Collaborate with a homeroom partner (PYP core teacher) to develop systems, routines, and activities that foster a shared sense of community within a grade-level classroom
Support student supervision in formally scheduled and informal ways
Respectfully engage with parents as partners in their child’s developmental journey
Proactively implement school-based and IB-required policies, particularly those relating to teaching, learning, and student safety
Choose, act, evidence, and reflect on annual Teacher Professional Growth Plan (TPGP) goals that focus on positively impacting teaching, learning, and student success
Engage in mission-aligned and IB professional development opportunities to positively impact student success and advance school-based strategic priorities and IB development plans
Participate in and contribute to IB evaluation cycles, Ministry of Education and Childcare inspections, and CAIS Accreditations
Actively support the House system and K-7 and K-12 student life activities and initiatives
Actively support the Junior School co-curricular programme (2 of 3 terms/year)
Attend and participate in core school functions and special events
Maintain up-to-date First Aid Certification and Concussion Training (every three years)
Complete annual school-based training modules
Attend to additional duties and responsibilities outlined in the Southridge Faculty Handbook and the Junior School Guidebook
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE:
Bachelor of Education (Elementary - Primary); Master of Education an asset
Valid BC teaching certificate
Experience teaching Elementary Physical Education
Experience teaching at the K-5 level
Experience teaching in a school that offers the IB PYP is preferred
IB PYP training is an asset (Category 1, 2 or 3)
Proficiency with the Google for Education Suite

Southridge offers a competitive salary and pays 4% above the Vancouver School District. In addition, we have a comprehensive benefits package and a generous RRSP matching program, access to health and wellness activities including generous support for professional learning and development. The salary range for this position is from $69,817 to $113,901. Salary placement is based on years of teaching experience and educational accomplishments. For more details visit our career page.
