GRADE 1 CORE SUBJECT/HOMEROOM TEACHER (Full-Time, Continuing)
We invite applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), continuing Grade 1 Core Subject/Homeroom Teacher position to join our International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) Early Years team. POSITION OVERVIEW
IB PYP Core teachers proactively consider and nurture students' cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development through play, guided inquiry, and discovery. They collaboratively design, implement, and assess grade-level teaching and learning across the core subjects, guided by the grade-level BC Curriculum and the philosophy and framework of the IB PYP. They value opportunities to interact and build caring relationships with students in and beyond the classroom. They work closely and collaboratively with administrators, coordinators, other school leaders, teachers, support staff, and families to create a positive and inclusive school environment and climate. They embrace and uphold the Southridge vision, mission, and values.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop respectful and caring relationships with students in and beyond the classroom to nurture their belonging, safety, and connection within the school community.
- Differentiate teaching and learning to meet early primary students' unique intellectual, social/emotional, behavioural, and physical needs.
- Use research and evidence-based practices to equip students with foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
- Collaboratively plan and implement play-based inquiry and outdoor learning experiences using the BC Ed Plan and Early Learning Framework within the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) Early Years philosophy and framework.
- Actively implement the IB Approaches to Teaching (ATT), IB Approaches to Learning (ATL), and the IB Learner Profile through concept-based transdisciplinary teaching and learning.
- Support learner variability in the classroom context, including implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Student Support Plans.
- Guide student behaviour choices that align with the Junior School Promise and Southridge values.
- Nurture age-appropriate development of student agency and efficacy.
- Use standards-based grading and reporting to communicate each student's continuous development of essential skills and core subject learning standards, focusing on providing feedback and feedforward that highlights each student's strengths, areas for improvement, and next steps.
- Respectfully engage with parents as partners in their child's education and development.
- Document curriculum planning and reflection using school-based systems to meet IB PYP unit planning requirements.
- Plan for the mindful use of technology to enhance teaching and learning while ensuring students understand expectations for purposeful and age-appropriate use of technology as a learning tool.
- Develop and sustain respectful and professional relationships with colleagues through ongoing collaboration, inquiry, dialogue, and reflection.
- Support student supervision in formally scheduled and informal ways.
- Participate in the Southridge Teacher Integration Process (TIP) and other Professional Development opportunities determined in consultation with members of the Pedagogical Leadership Team.
- Proactively implement IB and school-based policies, notably those that relate to teaching, learning, and student safety.
- Actively support the House system and K-7 and K-12 student life activities and initiatives.
- Actively contribute to the Junior School co-curricular programme (2 of 3 terms/year).
- Attend and participate in core school functions and special events.
- Maintain up-to-date First Aid Certification and Concussion Training.
- Complete annual school-based regulatory training modules.
- Attend to additional duties and responsibilities outlined in the Southridge Faculty Handbook and the Junior School Guidebook.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Elementary Education; Master of Education is an asset
- Valid BC Teaching Certificate
- Experience teaching in the primary grades, preferably in a school that offers the IB PYP
- IB PYP training (Category 1, 2 or 3) preferred
- Proficiency with the Google for Education Suite

The salary range for this position is from $71,213 to $116,179. Salary placement is based on years of teaching experience and educational accomplishments.
