St. Thomas More Collegiate, a progressive co-ed Blessed Edmund Rice Christian Brother Catholic Independent high school in Burnaby, B.C., is seeking a secondary school educator to join our Social Studies department for part of the 2024-25 school year to fill a Maternity leave. The successful candidate will be expected to be part of a collaborative teaching team within our Social Studies department and within the larger school community whose goal is the positive growth and development of students. This halftime position will encompass three Grade 8 Social Studies classes and one block of split prep and coverage.
Our Social Studies program is broad and dynamic. Students learn about history, geography, culture, economics, law, government, social organization, and current issues and events. Students also learn how to belong to, and take responsibility for, the various communities of which they are a member: local school and neighbourhood, town and province, country and world.
Preference will be given to applicants with previous secondary school experience teaching a variety of courses and a Bachelor's Degree in Education.
Potential Candidates must be a member, or be in the process of becoming a member, ofthe British Columbia College of Teachers or hold a BC Independent School Teacher's Certificate. Letters of application, accompanied by a resume, and the names of two referees, should be received in a timely manner.

The successful applicant will have the following qualifications, experiences and abilities:
Must hold a valid BC Teaching Certificate or letter ofpermission
Ideally hold an undergraduate degree with a major in History or a Bachelor's degree in Education with a focus in History
Be familiar with the BC Social Studies Curriculum
Be familiar with the BC Curriculum's use and implementation of proficiency scales
Experience teaching Social Studies courses is an asset
Excellent English written, communication and presentation skills
Understand and demonstrate the need for culturally responsive teaching and learning
Use engaging technology to enhance learning
Select instructional resources and methods to meet diverse student needs
Work collaboratively with colleagues to build and foster educational growth
Create a classroom environment that promotes mutual respect and security to take personal educational risks
Foster supportive relationships with students and families
Implement a range of authentic learning assessments that provide timely feedback to students and a clear direction for parents
Maintain accurate, ongoing and complete records of student progress for the purposes of teaching, learning and reporting
Maintain excellent professionalism in all interactions with colleagues, students and parents
Certificate of Qualification from the Teacher Regulation Branch
Be willing to contribute to the co-curricular and cultural life of the school and model the values espoused by Blessed Edmund Rice as articulated in the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother Education
