Job Description:

The Segregated Funds' Financial Management (SFFM) team within Group Retirement Services Finance is responsible for the daily valuations, trading in underlying mutual funds, accounting control, and financial reporting for over 500 segregated funds. The Intermediate Financial Analyst role is a key member of the Accounting and Controls team within SFFM. This team of three individuals is accountable for the key controls on the valuation of the funds, reconciliations, reporting to Canadian Finance and Corporate, financial statements and notes for over 200 of the Funds, the coordination of various audits and the compilation of taxable income for the Funds to support plan member tax reporting.

A suitable candidate for this role will be someone who is interested in a breadth of accounting experience as they will have exposure to various accounting operations functions and will provide leadership to more junior staff.

This role will be based in Waterloo or Toronto

What will you do?

  • Coordinate the monthly reconciliation completion process to support the sign-off on account balances and attestation

  • Review and sign-off on monthly reconciliations to support the internal control environment

  • Provide mentoring to the junior financial analyst

  • Review and approve manual journal entries to the general ledger

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial and regulatory compliance reports for Segregated Funds

  • Provide consultative services to the SFFM Operations Team regarding the Segregated Funds accounting model as well as reconciling items

  • Work with internal and external auditors to plan and support the audit work

  • Coordinate supporting back-up and documentation to audit inquiries and provide meaningful explanation to audit inquiries

  • Lead the team’s year-end tax processing by working closely with GRS Tax and the SFFM Operations Team

  • Participate in the production of the audited financial statements for the Segregated Funds Annual Report

  • Identify, analyze and report on deficiencies in the control environment and implement new controls or processes to improve efficiency

  • An enthusiastic team player who enjoys sharing knowledge, experience and ideas, and is open to the ideas and input of others

  • Strong analytical skills and critical thinking with attention to accuracy and details

  • Possess an inherent passion for continuous improvement and innovation

  • Flexible and adaptable with the ability to align to changing priorities

  • Comfortable with new technologies and the ability to self-learn software

  • Post-secondary degree

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to work in a team environment

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in account reconciliations

  • Ability to understand complex accounting models and the segregated fund valuation processes and apply this knowledge to identify errors and resolve reconciling items

  • Strong communication skills to deal with individuals at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines under tight timelines

  • Self-motivated and adaptable

Assets

  • Successfully completed your CPA designation

  • Knowledge of PAM for Securities (PAM) software

  • Experience with SAP, Oracle, and corresponding software

  • Technical expertise with Microsoft Excel

  • Previous experience working in Investments or Segregated Funds

  • Completion of Canadian Securities Course (CSC)

Ability to manage a flexible work schedule as some overtime may be required outside of regular business hours to support critical time lines and/or project implementations

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.
