Job Description:

Role Summary:

The Senior Specialist, Health and Safety position will contribute to the Enterprise Physical Security (EPS) program and support the growth and maintenance of the international Sun Life (SL) Safety Program. This position will act in coordination with and direction of the Manager, Safety Operations to contribute to the continuous improvement of our Safety Program.

The successful candidate will provide direction and guidance to our Safety Committees. The support of Safety training at SL will be required along with the maintenance and storage of all training records and documents. This position will ensure proper document controls along with records management to meet all compliance requirements.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the development of our Safety Program by assisting in the implementation of strategic program elements and continued improvement of existing processes. The ability to provide high quality service to all requests in the form of advice, direction and education is necessary to drive a healthy and safety conscious culture. This position will engage and communicate to employees in a variety of business units and often with different levels of Management, as well as external engagement with Government and Industry representatives.

What you will do:

  • Participate in the safety committee meetings as a liaison, resource and advisor to all locations
  • Research applicable legislation to ensure the management system is compliant across North America
  • Monitor and analyze safety trends and incident data to ensure the designed programs provide a safe workplace for all employees
  • Contribute to a program of threat and risk assessments and physical security surveys for all Canadian work facilities owned or occupied by SLF
  • Oversee the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) program
  • Maintain all Safety pillar files and training records
  • Oversee the sourcing of Safety and Emergency training program requirements
  • Develop and lead internal training requirements and lunch and learn sessions as needed
  • Investigate and follow up with incidents as reported and submit for review to Safety committees
  • Support the Safety Committees with inspections, Legislator visits, and follow-up action items
  • Prepare reports for the PSCM team, including management, leveraging metrics and statistics
  • Support the Manager, Safety Operations in various safety and emergency services initiatives
  • Assist with the communication plan deliverables, and maintain the internal SLF Occupational Health and Safety share site and the Safety Ambassador Community Page
  • Support the policy and continuous improvement models

What your need to succeed:

  • Completion of a University degree or college diploma in Health and Safety, or equivalent experience and education
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in Health and Safety, Emergency Planning, Human Resources with an organization of comparable size and complexity to Sun Life
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point), and SharePoint

Preferred skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, organization, leadership and planning skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety regulations and life safety codes.
  • Willingness to learn and continually enhance Health, Safety and Security knowledge
  • Demonstrated organization and time management skills. Excellent problem solver with the ability to identify alternative and practical solutions.
  • Strong team spirit, motivation, proactive thinking, flexibility and adaptability.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
