Job Summary and Qualifications:

 

The Preclinical Research Facility at the Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) is proud to uphold the highest standards for the ethical care and use of animals in research, in accordance with the internal guidelines set by SRI, as well as the external guidelines set by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), and the OMAFRA Animals for Research Act. The Preclinical Research Facility is an essential support for many different avenues of research that are integral to Sunnybrook's vision of Inventing the Future of Healthcare. 

 

The Animal Facility Attendant is an integral part of the animal care team, providing daily support to ensure the highest standards of animal care.

  • Summary of Duties

    • The changing of food, water and bedding according to established facility schedules
    • Daily health monitoring and general animal husbandry and animal care
    • Notifying the Animal Health Technician(s), Veterinarian, and/or Facility Manager of any health or welfare concerns
    • Washing of cages, racks and bottles
    • Reception and preparation of incoming animals
    • Restocking and request ordering of supplies as needed
    • Communication with the Veterinary care team, Principal Investigators, and lab staff
    • Record keeping
    • Cleaning machines, area floors, walls and equipment
    • Protect the interest of the research animals by ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines (CCAC, OMAFRA)

     

    Qualifications/Skills

    • Graduate of or currently enrolled in a Veterinary Technician Program or Animal Care Program
    • Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) certification is an asset
    • Previous work experience in a Research setting an asset
    • Ability to understand and problem solve issues
    • Must have good organizational and time management skills
    • Comfortable working with various species
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member
    • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail
    • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
    • Must have an excellent attendance record
