Summary of Duties

Reporting to the Division Head of Clinical Chemistry, the successful candidate will join a team of Clinical/Medical Biochemists to provide professional oversight to Sunnybrook including its hospital laboratory partners in the Toronto area. In collaboration with Management, Medical and Technical staff, the Clinical Biochemist ensures the development and provision of services to continually improve standards of excellence and recognition.

 

Duties will include;

  • Act as the Scientific Consultant to medical and hospital staff on Clinical Chemistry matters including appropriate selection and interpretation of laboratory tests.
  • Participates in the 24-hour-7-day on-call consultation service roster.
  • Develops (with clinicians) and implements investigation protocols to improve diagnostic decision and test utilization.
  • Provides expertise, leadership and guidance in aspects of laboratory practices, divisional programs, quality assurance and continuous quality improvement
  • Works with clinicians, laboratory staff and other stake-holders in planning, implementing and monitoring of point-of-care testing.
  • Facilitates the provision, delivery and accessibility to practical, educational programs for staff members.
  • Working as a team, provides technical and decision support for the evaluation and implementation of laboratory instruments, products, and/or analytical procedures.
  • Collaborates in the planning, development and implementation of academic programs of the Department and with the University of Toronto.
  • Participates in educational activities including teaching of staff and trainees.
  • Participates in scholarly activities.

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Ph.D. Degree in Biochemistry or relevant discipline and must be certified (or eligible for certification) by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry
  • Previous experience in Clinical Biochemistry service is preferred.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of clinical and laboratory biochemistry testing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to promote teamwork, collaboration and partnership.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills to function as a consultant.
  • Has excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Has excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Is creative, innovative, enthusiastic, and respected.
