Summary of Duties:
 
Reporting to the CFO, the Director of Financial Services is responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all of financial reporting including compliance with external standards, annual audited statements and reporting of all balance sheet items partnering with internal and external stakeholders in this work positioning SHSC for success in the short and long term.
 
The DFS holds a key leadership role and drives processes such as policy development, maintaining strong internal control environment, monthly reporting and balance sheet analysis and quarterly balance sheet forecasts, partnering with other leaders to assess program risks and develop plans to mitigate and or capitalize using and sustaining sophisticated reporting tools (SAP, complex financial models)
 
Responsibilities include oversight of internal and external reporting for the Hospital and it $1.4B operation. The DFS ensures audited financial statements are an accurate reflection of our operations and are supported by clean external audit opinions which are ultimately presented and approved at STL and the Board. The DFS ensures all tax requirements and submissions are completed, and supports all external tax audits.
 
Payroll
The DFS is responsible for the completeness and accuracy of payroll, submission of remittances and corresponding internal and external reporting ensuring all staff at Sunnybrook receive their pay and all government requirements are meet. The Payroll Department processes biweekly pays (average of $17M and over 9,000 payments biweekly in addition to monthly physician and research stipends and weekly off-cycle pay). The DFS will maintains and influences changes needed to sustain key systems required to ensure staff are paid accurately including Dimensions (time and attendance) and Empath (payroll system).
 
Accounts Receivable
The DFS oversees and support all collections, billing and receivable work for the organization supported by a manager and team of A/R and billing professionals, providing direction, guidance and influences approaches to completing and sharing the results of the work with various stakeholders and recipients. Including clinical and sundry billing and collections (Refugee, WSIB, Interprovincial), non OHIP costing and billing, OHIP billing for medical imaging, processing deposits for marketed services and optimizing preferred accommodations.
 
Financial Leader and team builder
The DFS is a key leader in the CFO portfolio, working closely to support peer financial directors of total portfolio obligations. This includes development of the Financial Reporting, payroll and AR teams, including (but not limited to):
• Supports strong development and mentoring of staff and is a contributing member to CFO leadership team.
• Leads the team in identifying resource gaps, creating systems to organize and administer activities consistent with corporate direction.
• Establishes structures that enables staff to make decisions
• Coordinates, facilitates, and integrates the work of the team to ensure critical information for organizational leaders and decision makers is available
• Monitors and provides leadership and coaching for direct reports (3 managers) as well as 45 other finance professionals.
• Leads the continued development of operational and process improvement initiatives; strategies together with CFO to develop vision of what future finance team will look like and what systems are needed to support this work.
 
Strategic Leadership and Implementation
The DFS will collaborate with other hospital leaders and external partners to identify and define strategic opportunities for the organization. This includes (but not limited to):
• Contributes to the organization’s strategic planning process by effectively implementing the necessary changes within areas of responsibility.
• Supports corporate strategic plan implementation through system integration and development working with peers and partners(HRIS and SAP upgrades)
• Acts on the decisions, recommendations and advice of the Executive Vice Presidents, CFO and Senior Leadership Team.
 
Qualifications/Skills
Canadian Accounting Designation (CA and/or CPA) and experience within Canadian Accounting required
Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
A 10 year track record of overseeing the finances and operational aspects of an entity that has annual revenue exceeding $1.4B
Demonstrated ability to be flexible and agile while efficiently supporting the organization during periods of change and shifts in strategic goals and objectives
Experience in building and leading effective teams
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and supportively across programs and departments
Demonstrated skills in problem solving and conflict resolution
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement action plans that achieve organizational goals and objectives
Demonstrated excellence in thinking broadly and strategically when identifying the needs of SHSC and creating an action plan to address those needs
