Summary of Duties

Pharmacy technicians play a key role in providing personalized pharmaceutical care to cancer patients. The Odette Cancer Centre pharmacy technicians are involved in specialized medication dispensing of take-home medications and interact directly with patients going through an often stressful journey. They routinely solve many logistical problems for our patients and work closely with pharmacists, drug access navigators, nurses and physicians to ensure patients receive their prescriptions accurately and on time. As a specialty pharmacy, a majority of our prescriptions involve complicated adjudication and patient support programs. Odette pharmacy technicians are also responsible for sterile compounding of individualized chemotherapy doses for over 100 patients daily in the chemotherapy clinic. This involves many different drugs as well as clinical trial medications. Several different software programs are used in these dispensing functions, and technicians must also be competent in mathematical calculations and be able to efficiently prioritize multiple demands. Technician duties also include inventory management, ordering and receiving of drugs and supplies. This temporary position will initially be limited to specialty retail pharmacy dispensing, but could include sterile compounding, depending on departmental staffing.
