Description of the Position: Sunnybrook Research Institute is seeking an exceptional research polysomnography technologist to join the Sleep and Brain Health Laboratory (https://sleepandbrainhealth.ca/) to support a new randomized clinical trial of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI)

 

  • Over a span of 2.5 years, 206 older adults with MCI will be started on study-provided CPAP and maintained on CPAP for 8 months. 
  • Work alongside academic sleep physicians, a research study coordinator, a PhD student, and undergraduate research assistants.
  • Responsible for setting up 2-3 participants per week on CPAP, programming CPAP devices according to physician instructions, performing mask fittings, teaching participants how to use and take care of the CPAP apparatus, and working with participants on an ongoing basis both remotely and in-person to troubleshoot CPAP-related problems (leak, bloating, skin irritation, claustrophobia etc.) including managing the flow of CPAP adherence data. 
  • Help manage our inventory of CPAP devices, masks, tubing, and related equipment and serve as a resource to other members of the lab regarding CPAP-related issues. 
  • Contribute to scoring of polysomnograms, home sleep apnea tests, and other sleep diagnostics in support of this and other studies, and will assist with other aspects of the study (magnetic resonance imaging, sample collection, cognitive testing) although these duties will in general be taken care of by other members of the study team. 
  • Although occasional evening work may be required (e.g. to accommodate participants’ schedules for video calls or mask visits), there will be no overnight work.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Registered Sleep Technologist with RPSGT Registration
  • Prior clinical experience with setting up patients on CPAP, programming CPAP devices, performing mask fittings, retrieving CPAP adherence data, and working with patients to troubleshoot CPAP-related problems is essential
  • Experience scoring polysomnograms is required

 

Preferred Experience and Skills

 

  • Experience working with Home Sleep Apnea Tests is an asset
  • Skills in respiratory therapy are an asset
  • Skills in EEG are an asset
  • Experience in a research environment is an asset
  • Phlebotomy skills are an asset
