Reporting to the Director of Total Rewards, the Disability Management Specialist develops and manages programs to support employees with non-occupational disabilities, focusing on facilitating their return to work and ensuring legal compliance. This role involves collaborating with employees, HR, healthcare providers, and insurance companies to create a supportive work environment, while maintaining detailed records and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
Bilingual fluency in French and English is required to successfully support the full Canadian business.
What you'll do:
- Oversee and manage individual employee cases from the onset of disability through return-to-work.
- Coordinate with healthcare providers, insurance carriers, and other relevant parties to ensure effective and timely support for employees.
- Provide regular updates to managers and supervisors regarding the status of ongoing claims, next steps, and provide coaching and consultation for managers and HRBPs with respect to managing employees through the disability process.
- Facilitate proactive employee reintegration into the workplace and collaborate with appropriate external and internal partners through planning, implementation, barrier removal, and coordinating customized modified work programs.
- Ensure timely completion of required documentation for payroll, insurance carriers, and workers' compensation claims while maintaining protection of confidential and sensitive employee information. Notify employees and managers of any documentation gaps to avoid delays in claims management or income replacement.
- Support disability policy and procedure review and lead the communication of disability training materials, tools, and guides.
- Develop and deliver training programs for managers and employees on disability management, accommodation processes, and legal requirements.
- Collaborate with managers and HR team regarding absence prevention and early accommodation/flexible work arrangements.
- Collaborate on programs related to equity and diversity to ensure disability management practices are inclusive, predictable, and easily understood by employees and managers.
- In collaboration with the Pension & Benefits Coordinator and HS&E team, promote employee wellness by coordinating virtual health promotion programs to help reduce costs associated with chronic illnesses, such as depression, anxiety, diabetes, heart health, and high blood pressure.
What you bring:
- 5-7 years of progressive experience in a related field such as disability management, human resources, or occupational health, including experience with complex case management and return-to-work programs.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field such as Health & Safety, Human Resources, Rehabilitation Counselling, or Health Sciences. Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) is considered an asset
- Bilingual communication in English and French, both spoken and written, is required.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail, excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize, meet tight deadlines, and effectively manage internal and external relations.
- Ability to mediate conflicts and positively influence stakeholders.
- Assertiveness is required when working with third-party stakeholders (insurance carriers, etc.) to maintain acceptable service levels for both the company and employees.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
- Comfortable in a dynamic, ever-changing environment and able to apply sound judgment and flexibility to determine appropriate solutions.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to respond promptly and prioritize urgent situations.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of related legislation and regulations for all Canadian jurisdictions, including Employment Standards, OSHA, Human Rights Legislation, and AODA.
