Job Description:

Department Overview

Derivative Accounting Operations is a group of dedicated professionals within Chief Accountants Department that provides support for several lines of business across the bank (Wholesale, Treasury, Mortgages and Visa). This position is part of function supporting Treasury and Balance Sheet Management Accounting group.

Job Description

The individual is responsible for monitoring daily accounting results critical to management decision making process. The individual is also responsible for tracking, posting and reconciling all numbers used for reporting Treasury hedging activities. Working directly with Front Office, Finance Operations, and Treasury, the incumbent will learn and develop expertise in Hedge accounting principles, accounting operations and complex issues relating to the accounting for IFRS and US GAAP.

In addition, the person will be responsible for monitoring/ testing significant projects impacting hedge accounting and reporting. It involves liaising with various stakeholders, understanding and documenting project requirements, testing and working on SOP's, implementations and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Primary focus on introducing documented checks and control within each working file to eliminate / mitigate potential of any reporting errors or inconsistencies.

  • Perform month end posting of hedge accounting entries in PSGL and Oracle FMS

  • Review daily accounting results including hedge effectiveness and amortization, and escalate concerns

  • Monitor and maintain daily operational processes including manual input of derivative unwinds into amortization engines

  • Monitoring and track daily trade offset Process (when required)

  • Understand the rationale, logic of hedging strategies and the purpose of booking GL entries

  • Compile monthly, quarterly and annual disclosures for financial and regulatory reporting

  • Prepare and update desktop procedures for each critical activity

  • Involve in testing of changes to operational processes

  • Question existing process for potential process improvements

  • Compile month end reconciliations and results analysis

  • Follow up on source files required towards month-end

  • Check daily production error logs if any

  • Focus on project intake process, assessing and communicating impact to various stakeholders

  • Track and drive projects from start to completion, maintaining active communication with various group and ensuring that deadlines are met.

  • Track and follow up on ongoing projects

  • Compile and monitor monthly valuation differences and hedging capacity

  • Analyze and prepare monthly OCI/CTA flux commentary

  • Organize existing and new hedge documentation to ensure completeness

  • Update process procedure documentation periodically

  • Introducing documented checks and control within each working file to eliminate / mitigate potential of any reporting errors or inconsistencies.

Other functions

  • Develop expertise in accounting policy requirements for Hedge Accounting

  • Review daily hedge accounting results for hedge effectiveness and overflows and escalate concerns

  • Identify accounting and operational issues and provide recommendations for resolution

  • Ensure accounting and management information is complete, accurate, and timely.

  • Strive for continuous process improvement opportunities in line with the TD's philosophy

  • Ensure processes and controls are maintained function efficiently and effectively in line with Accounting mandate and policy from Chiefs

  • Perform regular and ad-hoc month end posting and reporting as needed.

  • The team member will have to manage manual intensive processes and work with complex excel files, so attention to detail is required.

  • Efficient and effective management, and account reconciliation in accordance with TDBFG policy.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and work effectively in teams

  • Assist in year end close process for own area.

  • Work with External / Internal auditors and SOX group in resolving audit queries.

  • Ensure Data integrity and Completeness / reasonability checks.

  • Compliance with Hedge maintenance requirements for global hedging strategies as assigned ( training will be provided in area of hedge accounting) .

Overall Accountabilities:

Financial

  • Provide and ensure financial reports are accurate.

  • Provide advice and guidance to business partners on a range of financial accounting issues within the scope of own area

  • Identify and develop key business performance measures or metrics for own area and ensure best practice information is shared with appropriate parties

  • Work to maximize shareholder value by developing key strategies, tactics for own unit and by conducting financial analysis to meet department objectives

  • Lead the development, implementation of new financial models, operating service standards, methodologies, frameworks and paradigms to support on-going operations for own area

Operations

  • Contribute to the strategic direction of the Finance function by keeping current on industry trends and best practices within own area, recognizing external and internal business issues and recommending action to senior management where applicable

  • Direct operation processes, financial reporting for own unit and ensure work is completed on time and within established service parameters

  • Manage respective financial accounting, planning operations to support the achievement of department objectives

  • Maintain and enhance key operational controls by ensuring adherence to internal policies, procedures, applicable regulatory guidelines and accounting standards for own area and identify opportunities to enhance operational effectiveness, efficiencies to support the overall Finance objectives

  • Work with various business partners to design and maintain effective accounting information systems to ensure integrity of financial data, facilitate analysis and Bank reporting needs for own area

Customer

  • Develop and maintain good relationships with key business partners and effectively communicate relevant recommendations on a range of operational processes

  • Liaise and effectively interact with internal and external auditors and ensure appropriate action is taken where required

  • Act as subject matter expert for own area and provide guidance, advice and recommendations to support dealings with business partners

  • Contribute to the analysis, due diligence and execution of potential business restructures, acquisitions, joint ventures and divestitures within own area of responsibility and ensure appropriate Finance areas are involved where necessary

  • Develop and assess significant new initiatives applying expertise and ensuring criteria for own area are met

  • Manage and coordinate requests for financial information, and ensure solutions balance and address business partner needs

  • Participate on internal, external committees as appropriate to provide advice to business partners.

  • Actively contribute as a member of the Finance management team and ensure ongoing communication with the broader Finance team on the progress of projects and issues

  • Provide financial accounting analysis relating to Derivatives Operations.

  • Requires good perspective of the finance function and the business area supported

  • Focuses on business performance and conduct financial analysis and reviews with an annual time horizon

  • Undertakes and completes a variety of complex projects and initiatives in an independent manner within defined parameters and objectives

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Hedge Accounting principles would be considered an asset

  • Accounting designation or working towards one is preferred

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Accounting Operations experience is required

  • Understanding of derivative valuation and booking process (Swaps , Cross currency swaps, Swaptions, FX Forwards and FX Swaps ) would be considered an asset

  • Capital Market and Specific business line product knowledge is an asset

  • Must be a team player and able to work closely with individuals from other areas to achieve objectives

  • Knowledge of back office(s), systems (Calypso / Oracle PeopleSoft / Essbase) and processes would be an asset

  • Analytical and problem solving skills; have an eye for detail; initiative to follow up on items or determine appropriate steps for timely resolution

  • Must have very strong MS Excel skills

  • Strong Access and Marco skills would be an asset

  • Ability to manage deadlines, multiple tasks and adapt well to changing priorities

  • Ability to work independently and explain complex issues in a simplified manner

  • Must be able to stay resilient under pressure.
