Wolf Creek Public Schools requires a full-time Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Journeyperson at the Bus Shop in Ponoka, AB. The Ponoka bus shop is one of two main bus shops in Wolf Creek Public Schools and looks after the mechanical requirements including regulars maintenance, repair and Commercial Vehicle Inspections of approximately 50+ school buses. The fleet of school buses are primarily diesel with a few gasoline buses.

This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.

Assignment

Full-time 1.0 Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Journeyperson, located at the Ponoka Bus Shop

Monday to Friday (8 hours per day/forty hours per week) to promote a positive work/life balance

Commencement date to be determined once a suitable candidate is found

Reporting directly to the Shop Foreman or Transportation Manger

The successful candidate must be able to provide a clean drivers abstract as well as a criminal record with vulnerable record check

Required Education, Knowledge, Qualifications, and Experience

A minimum of Grade 12 diploma from a recognized educational institution as approved by the Board of Education or a General Educational Development (GED) is required

Minimum of three (3) years’ experience related to transportation and fleet maintenance

Journeyperson Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or a Journeyperson Automotive Service Technician with the relevant experience.

Certified to inspect light trucks trucks, trailers, transports, commercial buses and school buses (CVIP)

Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and observed.

Valid Class 2 Driver’s License and “S” endorsement preferred.

Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

Knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office and related programs, including FleetVision

Experienced in computer diagnosis, Cummins Insite and QuickServe preferred.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Ability to ensure that the quality of work meets requirements

Ability to prioritize multiple demands and effectively manage time

Ensure shop safety and cleanliness through understanding and abiding by safety regulations policies and procedures

Knowledge in tracking maintenance, defect reporting, maintenance programs and repair history

Ability to use a wide variety of repair parts technical manuals/computer programs to access information relative to the assigned duties and apply this information to the parts and preventative maintenance functions

Ability to operate a service truck and make service calls in case of bus or vehicle breakdown

Ability to do Medium Load Work which includes:

Employees must be physically fit and able to handle various tasks involving lifting, bending, twisting, turning, and climbing

Have good interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment

Present a professional attitude and appearance

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Heavy Equipment Technician shall perform such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned including but not restricted to the following:

Support and maintain a preventative maintenance service program

Be involved with the shop foreman in the review and recommend the repair and replacement of buses and fleet vehicles

Road test vehicles to verify complaints or repairs. Consult with the shop foreman as needed about mechanical issues in regards to proper diagnosis and repairs to ensure the repair is done correctly

Assist in the maintenance of an adequate inventory of vehicle parts and equipment

Develop and maintain a positive working rapport with the bus operators, staff and the public

Maintain awareness of technical developments and advancement in diagnostics, equipment, supplies and materials

Maintain awareness of codes and regulations; converse with inspectors for regulatory agencies within the area of accountability

Promote safe work practices in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety, Board Policy and directives by supervisors

Conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to an educational institution that provides services to children

Be willing to engage in lifelong learning with respect to professional development, training, in-service and courses

May be required to drive school bus as needed

Perform other duties as may be required or assigned by the shop foreman and manager or assistant manager

Inventory, Equipment and Tools

Expected to provide/supply own personal standard Mechanics/Hand tools

Maintain shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.

Assist in the ordering of equipment and supplies and maintaining accurate records.

Recommend replacement of existing equipment.

Assist in an annual inventory of physical equipment and supplies.

Assist in the upkeep and appearance of shop and parking lot areas.

Other duties assigned.

Judgment, Independence, and Client Contact

Confidentiality:

At no time should a Transportation Mechanic discuss in public, information pertaining to anyone in the School Division. A Transportation Mechanic is expected to respect the confidential nature of the position by avoiding discussion about any topics that are not formally communicated to the public by the administration of the school or the School Division. Breaching confidentiality is a serious violation of acceptable conduct.

Independence:

The Transportation Mechanic is expected to work independently and as a team member of the Transportation Department, all schools and the division office as required.

Client/Peer Contact:

This employee works collegially/professionally with all school staff, school-based administration and other division-based staff. Contact with other employees and outside agencies is regular and frequent.

Responsibility for Quality of Assigned Work

The employee is under supervision and is responsible for the quality of the work and is expected to seek clarification and direction on any matters of concern.
