Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator

Assignment
Part-time 0.50 FTE Health and Safety Coordinator
Duties to commence August 27, 2025 and continue until June 20, 2026
Reporting to the Assistant Superintendent of People Services, the Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator will have duties and responsibilities in the following areas:
Performance Responsibilities
- Acts as an advisor for the health and safety committee and central office leadership team;
- Identifies safety-orientation and safety-training requirements;
- Makes recommendations to the safety committee and schedules the training as approved and required;
- Investigates all accidents and track all injuries for severity, frequency, area and worker;
- Investigate all near misses and imminent danger complaints and prepare a written response to them;
- Responds to all identified safety concerns, incident reports and dangerous occurrence reports;
- Maintains, investigates, and supports WCB files and liaises with WCB offices;
- Works with the Assistant Superintendent, People Services to develop safety policies and disaster plans;
- Reports accidents/incidents to workplace health and safety as required by legislation;
- Communicates with employees about safety training and safety issues;
- Schedules and maintains a hearing protection program in accordance with safety legislation;
- Supports Workplace health and safety officers on worksite visits and inspections;
- Recommends corrective action to ensure compliance with Workplace health and safety compliance orders;
- Ensures schools and departments maintain current Safety Data Sheets (SDS);
- Ensures appropriate sufficient safety equipment is available to workers;
- Responds to call-outs regarding accidents, incidents, and occurrences;
- Works closely with the supervisors ensuring their workers comply with safety legislation while at work;
- Conducts inspections of all facilities within the Division and submits inspection reports accordingly;
- Completes required training courses as outlined by the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services;
- Develop and communicate OH&S related policies, procedure and safe work practices;
- Perform audiometric testing and evaluation in all key areas as legislatively required;
- Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of People Services.
Qualifications and Requirements
Minimum of a 4-year degree or 2-year diploma in occupational health and safety, education, or closely related field;
Working towards or commitment to the current Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP) certification or equivalent;
Minimum 5 years experience in safety or the education profession;
Experience as a leader directly involving the implementation of safety legislation with staff members;
Ability to establish high levels of trust and rapport with colleagues and staff;
Ability to communicate and collaborate with sensitivity, diplomacy and tact; and
Advanced investigative, problem solving, assessment and analytical skills; and
Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel to all schools and buildings in WCPS.
Assist the WCPS Health & Safety Committee in their mandate to discuss, review and oversee the WCPS Health and Safety Program.
Provide guidance and advise senior management in implementing district and site specific OH&S goals and objectives.
Identify safety training requirements, make recommendations to district administrators, and facilitate and maintain the Hour Zero training program.
Collaborate with WCPS People Services department to facilitate an effective WCB and loss control program.
Manage WCPS online compliance and training management system, (Hour Zero) including customizing and developing courses and assessments to better serve the district.
Liaison with local fire authorities to ensure fire code compliance.
Work closely with the managers, principals and contractors to ensure their workers comply with health and safety legislation.
Provide ongoing communication to employees related to health and wellness.
Maintain and expand upon professional development: This includes active membership in:
AEHSA (Alberta Education Health and Safety Association).
Attend relevant Health and Safety Conferences and meetings.
Additional Information
Location: Division Office, Ponoka, AB.
Salary: Salary for a certified employee will follow the Collective Agreement for a Coordinator Salary at a 0.50 FTE
Salary for a non-certified employee will follow the Employee Handbook and be placed between $35.77 to $44.96 per hour, based on relevant education and experience.
