Location/Division Specific Information

The Technical Writer position is located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada within our Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division.

As a Technical Writer at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the development and maintenance of end-user product information for our Lab Automation group's hardware and software products. You will be a crucial resource, working on HTML5 help resources, online training videos, e-learning modules, and other educational resources aimed at our product end-users.

A day in the Life

  • Collaborate with diverse teams to develop digital media materials, including video and e-learning modules.
  • Perform regular copyedits and substantive reviews to ensure the accuracy and clarity of product information.
  • Create and maintain product information for the Lab Automation group's library of software drivers.
  • Facilitate the transition from a PDF/print documentation library to an HTML5-based help system.
  • Develop customized, client-specific HTML5 system guides.
  • Assist with updates to the product information for various robotics and automation software products.
  • Participate in regular R&D team meetings, trainer and service technician debriefings, and SME interviews.
  • Proactively identify new product developments that require documentation.

Keys to Success

Education

  • A college or university degree in Technical Communications or a related communications field.

Experience

  • Previous work experience in a pharmaceutical, software, engineering, or other science-related field strongly preferred; with 4+ years experience in technical writing.
  • Superb written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with MadCap Flare and the MadPak suite of applications.
  • An understanding of HTML5, CSS, and XML, and their use in an authoring environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, planning, and time-management skills.
  • Familiarity with TechSmith Camtasia or equivalent video-editing software would be an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • A mastery of the English language.
  • The ability to quickly absorb and understand information about a wide range of subjects related to science, software development, engineering, and other technical fields.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time-management skills.
  • Proven ability to learn on the job and efficiently apply acquired knowledge and skills.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

The Technical Writer role may require sitting or standing for extended periods and working in a typical office environment. Some travel may be necessary, but it is not expected to be frequent or extensive.
