Key Accountabilities Reporting to and under the direction of the Executive General Counsel (EGC), this position will work with Legal Services team and will provide an opportunity to work on a range of challenging and interesting legal/policy matters such as drafting and preparing legal documents and legal reports for use in, in tribunal, mediation and or in court proceedings, and for board corporate governance purposes Drafting, organizing and preparing forms and hearing/appeal materials in accordance with the applicable Rules of Procedure for the Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, Court of Appeal, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and other courts, tribunals, arbitrators, and legal proceedings Keeping legal files updated, summarizing legal cases and helping manage external counsel Analyzing case files and maintaining /analyzing department's caseload and file statistics, and provide assistance in identifying key trends Scheduling and arranging for mediation and hearing dates and serving materials Conducting witness interviews, preparing witness statements and preparing/arranging for service of summonsesAssisting with legal needs related to academic hearings and preparing agreements and other legal documents Drafting correspondence to opposing counsel, to the courts or tribunals, as required Preparing files for mediation, hearing, document review and organizationReviewing and summarizing case decisions, pleadings, transcripts of examinations and preparing charts of evidence, undertakings, affidavits of documents, disclosure briefs, and satisfy production and other legal related requests Assisting in the preparation of document briefs, factums, motions, compendiums, charts, chronologies, summaries of documentary evidence, bills of costs, costs outlines, and draft default judgments and ordersProviding legal information to Superintendents and the system regarding the Education Act, other legislation, and Board policies (under supervision of the Board's lawyers)Other duties as assigned or required Requirements Minimum of a 2-year college diploma in an accredited law clerk program Minimum two (2) years' experience in a law clerk role, preferably in a law firm and/or public sector law departmentProficiency using all major computer applications such as Microsoft Office SuiteKnowledge of Rules of Civil Procedure and rules of practice/procedures of various courts and tribunals Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented atmosphereA desire to continually advance your skills and knowledge and willingness to adapt to new responsibilities Excellent organizational skillsExcellent verbal and written communications skillsFamiliarity with the Education Act and experience with a school board or other public sector work would be an asset Knowledge of public and administrative law would be an asset This is a non-union Level 9 position with a salary range of $ 85,621 - $ 102,747 along with comprehensive benefits including pension plan, vacation, and professional development opportunities.Who We Are Our mission at TCDSB is to inspire learning in every way and support our students and employees.
