The breadth of research, the complexity of the cases treated, and the magnitude of its educational enterprise has made UHN a national and international resource for patient care, research and education. With a long tradition of ground breaking firsts and a purpose of “Transforming lives and communities through excellence in care, discovery and learning”, the University Health Network (UHN), Canada’s largest research teaching hospital, brings together over 16,000 employees, more than 1,200 physicians, 8,000+ students, and many volunteers. UHN is a caring, creative place where amazing people are amazing the world.

This position is for a senior software developer to join a diverse team of passionate specialists who are working on expanding a next generation platform (data health platform) for storage and mining of patient data. Our data sources span everything from standard electronic medical record type entries and lab results to DNA sequencing data and diagnostic imaging. Our goal is to provide a robust and scalable platform to effectively integrate and facilitate the analysis of "Big Data" for purposes of research hypotheses testing and quality of care improvement.

Our team works in a casual work environment with a lot of energy and initiative. As a member of our team you will have an opportunity to participate in the decision-making process during design and development of the applications. We have a heavy preference in using open-source tools. Our architecture favors the microservice design pattern, with JSON for data-interchange format. Most of our data-store is no-SQL MongoDB, with some additional relational data in PostgreSQL. We develop primarily using Golang, however it is also common to encounter and use Python, Java, Ruby, and other programming languages. Our targeted deployment platform is Kubernetes and Linux Docker-runtime environments.

This position will help develop a variety of applications which have a direct impact on patient care at UHN.

Duties

The selected candidate will design and develop software for the digital health platform, primarily in Golang, although other languages may be required. The produced software will typically (in the immediate term) comprise of back-end microservices that process the data in the data lake. Processing of the data includes: integrating external data sources, implementation of search/retrieve API (GraphQL), anonymization, facilitation of "Big Data" analysis, etc.

The senior developer will be responsible for the full life-cycle of software delivery. This includes: requirement gathering, design, implementation along with testing, deployment and maintenance (troubleshooting, bug fixes). Documentation will also be required through various steps in the process (loosely modeled on Agile).

UHN uses email to communicate with selected candidates. Please ensure you check your email regularly.

Please be advised that a Criminal Record Check may be required of the successful candidate. Should it be determined that any information provided by a candidate be misleading, inaccurate or incorrect, UHN reserves the right to discontinue with the consideration of their application.
