Working in the Dean’s Office in support of all OAC units, the Accountant will play a critical role in advancing initiatives that support revenue growth and operational efficiency across OAC. This includes collaborative realignment of academic unit budgets, multi-year sustainability reporting and identification of opportunities to support and evolve college operations. With both day to day and project-based responsibilities, the accountant has exceptional analytic skills, strong policy and process orientation, and project management competencies. This is a critical role for the college.

Reporting primarily to the OAC Financial Manager & secondarily to the Associate Director, the Accountant provides professional accounting methods, financial expertise, analysis, support and guidance to managers, faculty, and directors in the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC). Financial support covers operating budgets of over $30M, and research exceeding $48 million per year. The incumbent’s responsibilities will cover a breadth of financial duties in the OAC Dean’s Office and in service of the units directly, including analysis, forecasting, budget allocation, and ensuring compliance with University policies and government regulations

They will manage OAC’s operating accounts by reviewing payments/revenues, administering finances for OAC programs, and working with unit managers to provide OAC-wide data. The incumbent will be responsible for timely and accurate reporting for these units, to analyze costs and variances, and to enhance the financial development and management of the College by ensuring best practices are achieved while meeting the College’s and the University’s objectives.

For OAC’s research accounts, the Accountant will work closely with faculty, department staff, and Research Financial Services to monitor and reallocate spending, provide documentation for reporting, reconcile account balances, and perform general unit-level grant administration.

For OAC’s endowment and grant accounts, the Accountant will work closely with OAC AA&D team and University AA&D team to plan, monitor and allocate funds, to ensure the best utilization of funds, proper reporting and reconcile the accounts.

Requirements of the position:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or Commerce (Masters degree preferred) and a CPA designation (or towards completion).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related experience. Applicants should have proven knowledge of financial and accounting principles and procedures, be able to conduct financial analyses, and be able to generate reports for decision making.
  • Demonstrated planning, leadership, and time management skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and attention to detail skills
  • Expert knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel) and relational databases
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Experience in a university and government culture is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with ERP system would be considered an asset.
