General Purpose
The Child Care and Learning Centre (CCLC) is a licensed child care centre that functions as the laboratory school for the University of Guelph. As a lab school, the CCLC is committed to providing excellence in early learning; experiential learning for undergraduate and graduate students; and inquiry through research and scholarship. The CCLC is a laboratory for learning how best to prepare children for a future of engaged citizenship, commitment to social and environmental justice, and lifelong wellbeing. As a large licensed child care centre, the CCLC provides an important service for University of Guelph students, staff, and faculty, as well as children and families within the Guelph community. The CCLC offers a safe, supportive, and caring environment for children to learn and develop.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Business Operations Manager, the Child Care Cook is accountable for the design, implementation and delivery of an exemplary food service program in collaboration with the Director, Business Operations Manager and according to legislated requirements and public health guidelines. Food service is one of the most important ways to reduce the ecological impact of our operation. Consistent with our values and commitment to sustainability, the CCLC follows a plant-based, predominantly whole-food menu.
The responsibilities of the Child Care Cook include: menu planning, design and approval processes; food and kitchen related supply purchasing; and food preparation. The food service program provides variety, high nutrient value, and ensures adherence to special dietary requirements of young children and those with food restrictions, allergies, or anaphylaxis.
The Child Care Cook works within the policies and procedures of the CCLC and in compliance with the Ministry of Education Child Care and Early Years Act, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health Regulations, and City of Guelph Fire Regulations. They also collaborate with the Business Operations Manager to ensure adherence to budget parameters and efficient use of resources. The Child Care Cook maintains an organized and sanitary kitchen, is responsible to inspect equipment before use and maintain service contracts on all appliances and equipment.
The Child Care Cook provides functional guidance to the Kitchen Assistant and oversees and student kitchen staff, nutrition volunteers, and 4th year nutrition practicum students. They foster positive relationships with families, children, staff, and students.
Requirements
- Education: Two Year Community College Diploma in Culinary Arts, Hospitality or related field
- Experience: 2-3 years - large volume cooking in a commercial kitchen
- Valid Food Handlers Certificate
- Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR-C
- Verification of required immunizations
- Leadership experience in a kitchen and experience training kitchen staff
- Culinary and or knife skills training
- Training on production techniques and operation of commercial kitchen equipment
- Experience menu planning
- Experience ordering food and supplies
- Demonstrated ability to guide, mentor, and support students and volunteers
- Basic computer and technological skills
- Demonstrated excellent attendance record
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
