General Purpose

The Experiential Learning Hub collaborates with industry and community partners to provide experiential learning opportunities that enable students to apply and advance their learning in real-world contexts. The Co-operative Education program formally integrates a student’s academic studies with periods of full-time work experience. Over 5,200 co-op students participate in over 65 co-op majors at the University of Guelph. 900-2,200 co-op students are employed in each fall, winter and summer semester representing millions of dollars in earned wages each year.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Co-operative Education Operations, the Co-op Foundations Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Instruction and administration of COOP*1100 and COOP1120 an online 12-week pass/fail co-op preparation course required for all co-op students.
  • Monitoring COOP*1100/1120 student registrations, evaluating student work and managing support from Peer Helpers and Graders.
  • Designing and revising the COOP*1100/1120 course curriculum and rubrics, lesson plans and manuals.
  • Supporting and providing career advising for all co-op students prior to their first work term.
  • Conducting co-op work term site visits with employers and co-op students to monitor student learning, work performance and the quality of each work experience.
  • Promoting co-op to prospective students during recruitment events.
  • Advising current co-op students on presenting themselves effectively to potential employers; the current job market and future labour market trends; the range of effective job search strategies and supporting them in developing marketing strategies to obtain work.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree along with a minimum of three (3) years related experience in co-operative education or experiential education. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • The ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking and student career advising.
  • Advising on issues related to employment barriers and issues of workplace accommodation, needs of a diverse client population (e.g., Indigenous, racialized, and LGBTQ2IA+ students and students with disabilities, etc.)
  • Knowledge of University of Guelph academic programs and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with constant interruptions.
  • Strong proficiency with computers, on-line instructional design and group facilitation skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative work relationships.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage high workload volumes and prioritize workflow to fulfill the demands of the position.
  • High level of diplomacy, tact, judgment and the ability to multi-task while maintaining a high quality of work.
  • Certificate from a recognized post-graduate program focusing on career development and/or adult education with curriculum related to career planning, ethics, on-line course instructional design and working with diverse populations is preferred.
