General Purpose
Reporting to the Manager, Structural shop, the Locksmith is responsible for installing, repairing, adjusting and maintaining all types of locking systems and life safety hardware throughout campus.
Duties and Responsibilities
Disassembling and reassembling locks as appropriate; maintaining safes and worn vaults by replacing tumblers, springs and other parts, or by tooling them to the correct dimensions; re-keying locks and changing lock combinations; unlocking doors, cabinets and any other locking structure that is not working normally; distributing keys according to University policy; maintaining lock and key records using key control software and spreadsheets; maintaining related tools and equipment; requisitioning hardware; wiring low voltage electric lock units; maintaining electronic access control units; repairing doors; designing master keying systems to suit the requirements of departments throughout campus; installing and maintaining security and life safety related devices; providing estimates of the material and time required to complete a job; cuts and shapes materials to fashion repairs to obsolete locks; and other associated duties as assigned. The incumbent will be required to participate in the shop’s call-in list, as well as take training provided or arranged by the employer.
Requirements
Grade 12 education or equivalent, Community College or equivalent formal training as a locksmith, combined with a minimum three years’ previous working experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Education and experience that includes electronic access systems is preferred. Experience using a computerized database and Excel spreadsheets is required, as are blueprint-reading skills. Also required are excellent communication and interpersonal skills, an orientation to customer service, and the ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision. Carpentry skills would be an asset, as would knowledge of master key systems, Medeco certification, and experience maintaining accessible entrance devices.
