General Purpose
Established in 2008, the Morwick G360 Groundwater Research Institute (Morwick G360) represents the University of Guelph’s response to global challenges related to safe and sustainable water supplies that support human populations and ecosystems. With an annual operating budget of ~$5M, Morwick G360 leads multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary collaborative research projects focused on advancing knowledge and technologies for bedrock groundwater systems. Reporting to the Director of the Morwick G360 Institute, the Senior Research Scientist and Project Manager will lead transformative groundwater research projects while managing their operational and financial aspects. This role requires strong leadership in scientific innovation, stakeholder engagement, and project delivery to address critical challenges in hydrogeology.
Duties and Responsibilities
Project Management
- Develop and implement new research proposals, work orders, and budgets exceeding $500,000 annually.
- Manage 2-3 research projects or one large-scale initiative, including substantial budgetary oversight.
- Liaise with stakeholders, organize project meetings, and ensure adherence to milestones and deliverables.
- Oversee procurement, sub-agreements, and compliance with health and safety protocols.
- Monitor project progress, expenditures, and staff/student contributions; prepare comprehensive progress reports.
Scientific Leadership and Research
- Develop innovative field methods, standard operating procedures, and tools.
- Lead experimental design, fieldwork, data collection, and analysis using advanced hydrogeology software.
- Publish peer-reviewed papers, prepare technical reports, and present findings at conferences.
- Train and mentor students and staff in research techniques while ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
Teaching and Outreach
- Prepare and deliver presentations for graduate courses, outreach programs, and professional short courses.
- Represent the Institute at public forums, conferences, and stakeholder meetings.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Earth Sciences, Hydrogeology, or a related field.
- 8-10 years of experience in hydrogeology or related disciplines, with proven expertise in project management.
- Strong leadership, strategic planning, and scientific communication skills.
- Experience working with multi-institutional collaborations and managing complex budgets.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience working with stakeholders and partners in the public and private sectors.
- Strong technical and managerial analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
