The Department of Pathobiology at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in veterinary and comparative pathology, veterinary infectious diseases, and immunology. The Support Service Technician is responsible for practical student laboratory preparation, assisting with student-centered learning, providing departmental technician support and managing all the teaching materials, resources, and equipment in the department. The position includes taking an active role in a variety of department activities and can include project management.

Responsibilities include:

  • Practical student laboratory preparation for all Pathobiology courses
  • Assist with student-centered learning
  • Manage all teaching materials, resources, and equipment in the department
  • Assist with online teaching software including, but not limited to CourseLink, for a variety of functions including, but not limited to, course site development, grade entry, etc.
  • Take an active part in a variety of department projects and activities which may include project management
  • Other duties as assigned by the Departmental Chair

Requirements of this position include:

  • Undergraduate Degree, Bachelor of Science coupled with one (1) - two (2) years experience, an equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered
  • Veterinary Diagnostic or Research Lab experience
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritize competing tasks
  • Computer skills including:
  • Advanced training and/or experience with Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, & Teams)
  • Website development and maintenance

Candidates need to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including the use and maintenance of benchtop laboratory analytic equipment
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Experience with light microscope and photomicroscope setup, usage, and basic maintenance; familiarity with digital microscopy
  • Working knowledge of databases, database management, word processing, spreadsheet development and management.
  • Computer and information technology skills including:
  • Ability to use MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, Photoshop, Dreamweaver (or similar), SharePoint, Teams, plus an ability to master Courselink (Desire2Learn), and other teaching/learning-related software and equipment
  • Ability to create, digitize, and manipulate digital media (images, videos, etc.,) with photo editing software (Photoshop or other)
