As a key member of the Velocity team, the Investor Relations Officer (IRO) is responsible for the full scope of development activities related to the discovery, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship of a portfolio of investors, including, but not limited to, venture capitalist, family offices, angel groups and individuals to start-up companies managed by Velocity and collaboratively with the greater University of Waterloo community.

The IRO will primarily focus on preparing founders for fundraising success, managing a growing pipeline of start-ups, actively engaging with investors across North America and promoting Velocity’s portfolio to the broader community.

Develop and Maintain Investor Relationships

• Lead research and analysis efforts to identify potential investors and strategic partners, leveraging insights to inform investor engagement strategies
• Plan and execute outreach activities to existing investors, ensuring alignment with their investment goals and preferences.
• Schedule and participate in one-on-one meetings with investors to address inquiries and provide tailored updates on investment opportunities
• Manage all investor inquiries, while proactively identifying internal opportunities for growth and collaboration Collaborate closely with the marketing team to create targeted communication materials, including newsletters and reports, tailored to different investor segments.
• Organize/co-organize exclusive events or webinars for investors to foster a sense of community and engagement.
• Create, maintain and update investor databases, ensuring accurate records and contact information for effective communication and relationship management.

Financial Communication

• Compile comprehensive reports and presentations for Velocity leadership, providing strategic insights and analysis to guide decision-making processes
• Engage closely with portfolio companies to develop impactful offering materials, including financial reports, presentations, and succinct one-pagers, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives
• Contribute to the creation of robust financial models to forecast future performance, facilitating informed strategic decision-making across the organization
• Review and assist in the develop of due diligence packages and data rooms.
• Represent Velocity portfolio companies at major investment summits and conferences, fostering relationships and showcasing the value proposition to potential investors.

Investor Meetings and Events

• Strategically plan and meticulously execute exclusive virtual and in-person investor events, meetings, and webinars to cultivate a vibrant community and enhance engagement, ensuring a seamless and professional experience throughout
• Collaborate closely with portfolio companies to curate compelling and informative presentations tailored to each investor event, effectively showcasing value propositions and growth opportunities
• Arrange follow-up meetings or Q&A sessions to address specific investor inquiries or concerns.
• Conduct thorough evaluations of the success of each investor event, meticulously analyzing outcomes and attendee feedback to provide actionable recommendations for continuous improvement.

Continuous Improvement

• Solicit feedback from investors through surveys or direct communication to identify areas for improvement.
• Propose and implement enhancements to communication processes, reporting structures, and engagement strategies.
• Stay informed about best practices in investor relations and incorporate innovative approaches into existing practices, advising leadership as required.
• Actively participate in team meetings to share insights and contribute to the continuous improvement of the overall incubator operation.
• Support implementation of software systems by providing input and recommendations.

Market Research

• Conduct in-depth monitoring of industry publications, research reports, and market analyses to remain at the forefront of industry trends and developments.
• Deliver customized reports to investors, offering comprehensive insights into the competitive landscape and identifying potential investment opportunities.
• Partner with the marketing team to develop thought leadership content derived from meticulous market research findings, positioning the organization as an authority within the industry.
• Take an active role in industry conferences and networking events, engaging with key stakeholders to broaden knowledge and strengthen connections within the industry.

• Bachelors degree in Economics, Business Administration, Finance or equivalent
• Minimum 3 years of experience in entrepreneurship, fundraising, venture capital, consulting and/or investment banking
• Excellent communication (both written and verbal), public speaking and presentation (both virtual and in person), facilitation, and negotiation skills
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently and effectively as part of a team with a broad mandate in a fast paced, highly computerized and challenging environment
• Proven competence in project management, multi-tasking, planning, analytical and organizational skills
• Proven record in project management, data management and tracking
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
