The community of Bella Coola is seeking a Locum Family Physician with Emergency experience to join their healthcare team for various dates leading up to March 31, 2026; available dates will be provided upon contacting the Physician Service Coordinator.
Bella Coola General Hospital serves the valley and Anahim Lake, offering comprehensive care for a population of 2200 people. We provide six long-term and eight acute care beds, a two-bed emergency department, and a trauma bay. On-site services include lab, X-ray, physiotherapy, mental health support, and Aboriginal Navigator assistance.
The facility is staffed by three to four physicians who provide inpatient, emergency, and primary care, supplemented by real-time virtual specialists covering emergency, pediatrics, maternity, and dermatology. No obstetrics required. Clinic support staff is provided. Our ER is open 24/7. The call schedule is 1-in-3 or 1-in-4 split shifts.
Bella Coola is a small community situated on the Central Coast, nestled among the majestic Coast Mountains, in the Heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. Several smaller settlements stretch along 80 km of highway along the beautiful Bella Coola Valley. The town is located in the traditional, unceded, ancestral territory of the Nuxalk Nation.The temperate climate of the Bella Coola Valley receives less rainfall than the outer coast, and its microclimate provides excellent growing conditions for true homesteading!The Bella Coola Valley offers all essential amenities for comfortable living, including grocery stores, restaurants, artisan shops, several schools, and more.
Applicants will require ACLS, ATLS, and PALS certification to work in Emergency. If any of the certifications have expired, the CARE certification can replace the expired certifications.
Other benefits include estimated MOCAP on-call coverage, with an average on-call ratio of 1:3 or 1:4. This site is eligible for assistance through the Locums of BC program, subject to applicable conditions.
Prior to confirming the locum, you will be provided with Orientation information. Once you arrive, one of our team member will meet you at the airport as there is no taxi service, take you on a brief tour of the community, and settle you into your apartment. You will have access to the clinic Jeep in case you want to do some sight-seeing. Enjoy the outdoor pool in the summer, outdoor ice rink in the winter, gym, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, and kayaking. Some equipment is available to be borrowed.
