Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for an Executive Director, Clinical Risk Management, ReAct Adult Protection, Policy Office, and Patient Care to join the team at the Vancouver General Hospital.

Reporting to the Vancouver Coastal Health General Counsel, the Executive Director is responsible and accountable for the organization’s Clinical Risk Management, ReAct Adult Protection, Patient Care Quality Office (PCQO) and Policy Office strategies, programs, and initiatives in accordance with the vision, values, and strategic objectives of the organization, while complying with provincial and federal laws and standards. The Executive Director demonstrates a high degree of senior leadership and critical oversight and is responsible for providing senior executive leadership to a broad portfolio that integrates accountabilities across a number of health authority-wide portfolios, and leads the strategic planning, development, transformation, programs and initiatives support at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

Primary organizational contacts are with the VP’s Communities of Care, VP Professional Practice, VP Medicine, VP Quality & Patient Safety, Data and Analytics leadership, Senior Medical Directors, and Regional Corporate Services Directors to ensure VCH’s alignment with current directions and practice.

As an Executive Director, Clinical Risk Management, ReAct Adult Protection, Policy Office and Patient Care with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Lead a portfolio that provides leadership and expertise to the designated areas through medical and clinical leaders, fosters a culture of continuous improvement throughout VCH, champions care improvement initiatives, measurement and monitors their efficacy with the goal to reduce the risk of adverse events for patients and their families across the communities of care.
  • Collaborate with executive and senior leads on all aspects of strategic planning, quality and clinical transformation that cross and impact major segments of the organization to move initiatives forward, ensuring commitment and adherence to best practice.
  • Liaise, strategize, consult, negotiate, and collaborate with various external healthcare and government organizations both provincially and nationally, the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, government agencies, and other partner organizations regarding risk, quality office, Policy, and ReAct related issues.
  • Set the strategic direction and oversee all aspects of the development, implementation, and delivery of effective, designated programs for the health authority, acting as a strategic partner to other health authorities provincially. Leads in the establishment of processes that translate knowledge into policy and practice and use evidence to inform the development of VCH’s strategies.
  • Establish effective regional-wide policies and strategies for safe patient care and other portfolio areas consistent with the VCH vision, values, and strategic direction. Works in partnership with senior operations and medical leadership across the health authority to lead and communicate strategies, policies, and operational plans.
  • Oversee and manages VCH’s clinical risk management, ReAct, Policy Office, and PCQO long-range strategic plans, goals, and annual objectives to ensure business strategies and operational plans support and deliver the vision of VCH into the future, in partnership with VCH Executive Team, VP’s, Communities of Care, Senior Medical Directors.
  • Lead, develop, manage, implement, and evaluate clinical and corporate risk management systems. including building a risk-smart workforce and environment that allows for innovation and responsible risk-taking while ensuring legitimate precautions are taken to protect public interest, maintain public trust, and ensure due diligence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Juris Doctorate or a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline supported by a minimum of twelve (12) years’ recent, related experience including experience within a large multi-site tertiary academic teaching hospital, with successful contribution and leadership on provincial initiatives.
  • Registration with the applicable College/Society/professional association as required for the profession, preferred.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Demonstrated critical thinking, analytical skills encompassing an organization-wide perspective.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, innovative leadership, and systems improvement skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare issues as well as specialized knowledge in risk management, privacy, change management, information management, patient safety, quality complaints management, and policy development.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with people across all disciplines and settings, in addition to the integrity, trust and professionalism that the role requires.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and training on policy, procedures, and corporate practices.
  • Experience in project management in a leadership position.
  • Demonstrated history of positive collegial relationships with management, support staff, Health Authority-based providers and leaders, and clinicians.
  • Ability to communicate complicated or highly technical matters in a way which is clear, concise, and understandable. Ability to take initiative in understanding the needs of others and taking action to achieve helpful results.
  • Computer proficiency with a variety of relevant software applications.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
