Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Social Worker 3 with a Master's Degree to join the Team in Powell River, BC. Apply today to join our team!
This position will be providing clinical supports and consultation to all programs in the local area and will be required to travel to home visits, hospitals, clinics, health centres etc., to meet with staff, physicians and clients. This position will also have an Indigenous specific focus to build and strengthen our partnerships with Indigenous Health, First Nation’s Reserve Communities and Health Centres, and various other Indigenous serving partners
As a Social Worker with Vancouver Coastal Health, you will:
- Provide consultation, education, mentorship, complex care planning and clinical guidance within the context of a client and family-centred care model, to ensure practice and organizational compliance with the statutory obligations and regulations of the Adult Guardianship Act (AGA).
- Develop decision support tools and policies, and recommends changes to practice to improve by analysing current literature and national trends.
- Provide consultation, mentorship, education and support to staff about all aspects of abuse, whether it be Adult Guardianship, Adult Protection and/or Domestic Violence as applicable to the designated portfolio, and applies knowledge of resources and intervention strategies to assist those impacted by adult abuse, neglect and self-neglect.

Education & Experience
- Master’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited University.
- Post graduate continuing education training in working with vulnerable/incapable adults (i.e. Full completion of the ReAct Adult Protection Curriculum (Modules 1-11)).
- Five (5) years’ recent, related experience in working with issues of adult abuse and neglect and self-neglect with vulnerable adults including recent social work experience working within the complex mental health and older adult populations and understanding of the patient and family dynamics of Abuse and Neglect.
- A Qualified Health Care Provider (as defined by AGA 2.1) and has experience conducting assessments of incapability under Statutory Property Guardianship (AGA 2.1) and Health Care Consent and Care Facility Admissions Part 3 or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Current full registration with the British Columbia College of Social Workers.
- Current BC Driver’s License and access to a vehicle for travel within the region, as required.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of social work theory and practice.
- Thorough knowledge of social work methodologies, Adult Guardianship Act, including Statutory Property Guardianship Regulation, the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent and Care Facility Admissions Act, Representation Agreement Act, Patients Property Act, Power of Attorney Act and other relevant legislation and VCH policies, government policies/procedures, medical and public health issues and domestic violence.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct complex psychosocial assessments including those related to investigations of alleged Abuse, Neglect and Self Neglect.
- Comprehensive knowledge of ethical decision-making and its application, as well as a comprehensive understanding of tolerable verses intolerable risk. Knowledge with respect to safety issues and confidentiality.
- Comprehensive knowledge of trauma informed care.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in a culturally safe manner with patients, caregivers, staff and community partners.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous Cultural Safety and the ability to provide culturally safe care to Indigenous people, families, and community.
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of geriatrics, domestic violence, complex family and cultural dynamics, developmental stages in the individual and family life cycle and psychosocial issues that may arise in response to changing health and dependency needs.
- Knowledge of adult education principles and ability to effectively teach and facilitate groups.
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of abuse, dementia and mental illness and ability to assess for capacity.
- Ability to make sensitive and insightful observations of individuals and to determine a course of intervention.
- Ability to develop and implement Support and Assistance Plans, and other Emergency Provision under AGA and coordinates a multisystem support network in accordance with VCH Guideline: Responding to Abuse, Neglect or Self-Neglect of Vulnerable Adults for DR and DRCs.
- Comprehensive knowledge of community resources in the area of adult abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and domestic violence. Ability to effectively access the health care system and community resources on behalf of patients, and families.
- Strong clinical expertise and sound judgment in working with individuals, families and systems, as well as the alleged/suspected abuser.
- Ability to work effectively with others, including understanding the roles of other disciplines, working as part of a multidisciplinary team, working effectively in a multicultural environment and working independently.
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload in a complex work environment.
- Ability to recognize and deal with emergent situations and exercise reasonable judgment when dealing with patients, families and staff.
- Broad knowledge of research methodology.
- Demonstrated computer literacy skills with current applications and equipment relevant to the program.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.
