SUMMER STUDENT - CUSTODIAL ASSISTANT
Summer 2025 (temporary seasonal) Approximately May 1 to August 29
Pay rate: $17.20/hour + 4% vacation pay
Anticipated Hours of work:
May to approximately July 1: MonFri 3:30pm-11:30pm (30-minute unpaid lunch)
July to August (dates TBD): Mon-Thurs 7:00am-5:00pm (60-minute unpaid lunch); Fri 7:00am-11:00am.
Work Location: assigned daily to various WCDSB locations across the City of Guelph and possibly Wellington County
The Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) is looking for enthusiastic, energetic and motivated students to join the seasonal Custodial team, during the summer of 2025. Seasonal dates will be determined, starting as early as May and ending by Labour Day.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Shadowing the role and many of the duties of our full-time Staff Caretakers, students are required to assist in the summer clean-up of our schools. Students work as part of a team with some independent work after instruction and training.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Cleaning and disinfecting washrooms and touchpoints
- Cleaning and disinfecting sinks, fountains/bubblers and fixtures in classrooms and hallways
- Descaling sinks as needed
- Removing garbage from classrooms, lunchrooms, shops and washrooms
- Wiping down and cleaning garbage bins, walls, bathrooms stalls
- Cleaning HVAC ceiling diffusers and return air ducts
- Cleaning and disinfecting desks
- Recycling bins brought to the curb for pick up
- Sweeping, dry mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming floors in hallways and rooms
- Sweeping, dry mopping, wet mopping of stairwells
- High and low dusting, window/glass cleaning
- Cleaning or removing spots from carpets.
- Washing tables, desks, shelving, cupboards, etc.
- Cleaning blackboards, whiteboards and chalk ledges as well as TVs
- Assisting with furniture movement in and out of rooms in order to do a full clean
- Assisting with stripping and waxing of floors
- Performing minor outside maintenance including grass cutting, garden clean-up and litter pick-up
In doing such tasks, you will be:
- Required to use chemicals and be aware of the safety requirements in the handling of such chemicals
- Exposed to dust
- Required to lift and carry books, boxes and other heavy materials
- Helping to make a clean and healthy working and learning environment for students and staff.
REQUIREMENTS:
All Summer Students will be required to complete online Health and Safety (H&S) training including but not limited to WHMIS, Slips, Trips & Falls, Workplace Violence, Back Injury & Lifting, AODA, H&S Policy, and Worker H&S Awareness.
Custodial employees must wear CSA approved steel-toe footwear. You will be provided with uniform shirts to wear during your work shift.

Preference will be given first to returning students suitable for the positions and then to students who are currently enrolled in University or College and are former graduates of the WCDSB system. Students completing their last year of high school in the WCDSB system may be considered if they are available to work when required. Applicants who are currently enrolled in University or College who did not graduate from the WCDSB will then also be considered should positions remain unfilled.
Applications submitted after the closing date will only be reviewed on an as needed basis. Returning students who previously submitted their interest and confirmed receipt via email or verbally are not required to re-apply.
Successful external candidates will be required to provide an original Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment. Please note that the CRC must be dated within 6 months of the date of acceptance of employment, and in most cases must include a Vulnerable Sector Screening.
