Job Summary:

Reporting to the Education and Prevention Lead, the Health Educator will be responsible for improving cancer prevention and screening knowledge and participation in Manitoba by developing, implementing, and evaluating health education and promotion strategies. These strategies must be comprehensive and may be province-wide or targeted to a specific community. They must not only address the combined and unique requirements of the population-based screening programs, but also address general cancer prevention and screening knowledge.

Health Educator responsibilities include developing materials and resources for the public and healthcare professionals, implementing and evaluating health promotion and communications strategies, facilitating public and healthcare professional engagement, collaborating with healthcare professionals and community partners, managing projects, and staying up-to-date on the latest research and trends in health education. This position works in close collaboration with other screening staff, as well as other departments at CancerCare Manitoba to set education priorities for the public and healthcare professionals.

Qualifications:

Required:

Education

  • Post-secondary degree in a discipline relevant to health, public health education, healthcare, adult education, or communications/public relations.

Experience

  • 3 years experience in health promotion/education or related activities within a healthcare or public health environment.
  • 2 years experience developing, implementing, and evaluating education strategies and activities for healthcare professional and public audiences.
  • 3 years experience working with the public and/or conducting public, community, or patient engagement.

An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills in English (both oral and writing). Ability to communicate messages in a professional and engaging manner to a variety of target audiences.
  • Experience managing projects with multi-disciplinary internal and external stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated. Ability to work independently, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing programs (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, Photoshop) and MS Office applications.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships.

Preferred

  • Experience in strategic planning to increase participant recruitment and retention.
  • Knowledge of cancer screening, cancer prevention, public/population health, and community mobilization.
  • Experience working with, and demonstrated understanding of, equity-deserving health issues.
  • Experience working with equity-deserving partners and stakeholders, such as but not limited to First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, newcomers, sexual and gender minorities, and individuals who are geographically isolated.
  • Presentation and public speaking experience.
  • Ability to speak and write French.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous language.

Asset

  • Knowledge of web-based design/publishing tools (e.g. Canva, Piktochart, and GoAnimate).
  • Knowledge of and experience with website management and social media tools.
  • Experience developing and managing public awareness campaigns.
  • Knowledge of Manitoba communities and their barriers to access healthcare.
  • Experience managing budgets.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle is required.
  • Ability to travel and be available for on-call/weekend/evening work when required.
