POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of Director of Care, Assistant Director of Care, and Physiotherapist, the incumbent is responsible for:

  • Developing and facilitating programs for Residents to help them achieve their health and wellness goals through physical activity.
  • Providing clinical supervision and training for students and participating in the education of other health care professionals.
  • Maintaining professional accountability, professional judgment, and reasoning with a high level of communication and collaboration.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with established health and safety regulations/guidelines, policies, and procedures (e.g., utilizing personal, protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies Manager or designate (i.e., supervisor) of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers, or any others who enter the premises.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Human Performance, Exercise Science or equivalent.
  • Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) obtained through the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology or equally recognized certifying body (i.e. ACSM).

EXPERIENCE

  • Recent and relevant clinical experience preferred.

LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Membership with the Manitoba Kinesiology Association preferred.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training is considered an asset.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of principles of Kinesiology.
  • Knowledge of relevant Workplace Safety and Health responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper lifting and heavy handling techniques.
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture and traditions an asset.

SKILLS

  • General knowledge of the regulations and scope of practice documents that guide the practice of Kinesiology and relevant support workers such as Rehabilitation Assistants.
  • Ability to express ideas and thoughts in English both verbally and in written format.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other disciplines.
  • Knowledge of the physical, social, cultural, and economic aspects of Resident care.
  • Demonstrated effective organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, clinical reasoning, conflict resolution and decision-making skills.
  • Working knowledge of research.
  • Ability to perform both independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to critically evaluate and apply relevant knowledge to practice.
  • Ability to delegate appropriately and monitor outcomes of delegation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The position involves moderate physical activity, especially walking.

FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Assess the Residents’ muscular strength and endurance to develop an appropriate exercise program appropriate to their condition and abilities.
  • Develop programs designed to increase flexibility.
  • Develop programs to assist those living with chronic pain to maximize function and improve their quality of life.
  • Analyze gait and provide recommendations to reduce pain or improve performance.
  • Evaluate baseline and post treatment measures of physical function to enhance the treatment plan.
  • Provide assessments and recommend assistive devices to enhance physical performance.
  • Instruct Residents in the proper use of equipment.
  • Develop and organize special events to enhance Resident quality of life.
  • Provide group instruction and assist with rehabilitation services.
  • Educate and motivate Residents to achieve benefit from interventions.
  • Adhere to facility and professional standards for documentation.
  • Maintain Resident confidentiality in accordance with all privacy legislation.

SAFETY

  • Ensures personal and Resident safety and maintains awareness of and adheres to safety procedures.
  • Contributes to a safe work environment and culture of safety.
  • Maintains awareness of emergency procedures and acts upon them when necessary.
  • Monitors equipment/supply needs; reports any hazardous conditions and equipment and takes action to address when appropriate.

OTHER

  • Provides input into peer performance reviews as requested.
  • Meets attendance and punctuality guidelines and follows established policies if unable to report to work.
  • Follows policies and procedures of the Simkin Centre.
  • Promotes achievement/maintenance of a clean and safe work environment.
  • Represents kinesiology on program, facility or regional committees as requested.
  • Attends and participates in departmental or program meetings and in-services.
  • May be required to perform other duties and functions related to this job description not exceeding above stated skills and capabilities.
