Under the direction of the Chief Nutrition and Food Services Officer, the manager oversees a team of clinical dietitians (Deer Lodge Centre, Middlechurch Home, River Park Gardens, Concordia Place, and Misericordia/Misericordia Place) and liaises with other receiving sites (Riverview Health Centre, Calvary Personal Care Home) and Winnipeg Heath Region - personal care home facilities to facilitate the provision of high quality, standardized, safe, and effective clinical nutrition care to patients/residents/clients.
The manager is responsible for inspiring, leading, recruiting, training, and coaching clinical dietitians within the long-term care sector to embrace and adopt evidence-based practice, integrated care pathways, and principles of clinical and service excellence with a client-centered focus. Leads the development and implementation of related clinical service policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines to meet best practices for patient/resident/client care and ensures appropriate communication and adherence.
The manager monitors and evaluates key performance indicators, identifies and implements continuous quality improvement initiatives, and provides feedback, direction and support to staff to ensure safe, effective, efficient, and appropriate patient/resident/client care and service excellence. Using current evidence and change management principles, the manager plans, manages and evaluates service delivery changes to improve service and meet healthcare needs, while ensuring compliance with policies, provincial clinical services standards, provincial legislation, professional standards of practice, and applicable code(s) of ethics within the clinical service area. Participates in regional long-term care and clinical nutrition initiatives, provides consultation for nutrition policy within the Continuing Care program, and liaises with internal and external stakeholders and partners to facilitate collaboration, provide support, resolve operational problems, and provide on-going direction as needed. Collaborates with healthcare facility administrators and staff to resolve interdisciplinary care challenges, operational issues, assess departmental needs, bring awareness to opportunities and risks, develop strategic plans, and enhance service delivery.
The manager is responsible for ensuring health services resources are appropriately staffed to ensure continuous service coverage in accordance with operational requirements and ensures fiscally responsible operational management of the financial reporting unit.
- Minimum of 3-5 years leadership/management experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- Minimum of 5 years clinical nutrition experience, preferably in the long-term care setting.
- Bachelor of Science Degree, Human Nutritional Sciences, dietetic or related area from an accredited Canadian university program or the approved equivalent if internationally educated required.
- Graduate of a recognized dietetic internship program or practical training program including the Masters of Applied Human Nutrition from University of Manitoba, which has been accredited by the applicable certifying body.
- Registered Dietitian - Registered with the College of Dietitians of Manitoba (CDM).
- Membership in Dietitians of Canada.
- Demonstrated leadership and project management capabilities.
- Knowledge of:
- Relevant professional regulatory requirements, including standards and scope of practice for direct reports.
- Relevant legislated acts include but are not limited to the Personal Health Information Act, Protection of Persons in Care Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Workplace Safety and Health Act.
- LEADS in a Caring Environment Framework.
- Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions).
- Scheduling software and business software is preferred.
- Dietary software and MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Relevant Collective Agreements.
- Working with individuals from diverse cultural, social and ethnic backgrounds.
- Regional/site/unit policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines relating to: clinical care, administrative, financial, and human resource management.
- Comprehensive knowledge of nutrition principles and their relationship to health and disease as they apply to medical nutrition therapy in all nutrition care settings.
- LEAN methodology is an asset.
- Able to work in a fast-paced office and clinical environment with frequent meetings, meet deadlines, and lift and carry items weighing up to approximately 10 kg (25 lbs.).
- Incumbent demonstrates the ability to problem solve, prioritize tasks, handle interruptions, re-prioritize as necessary, and maintain focused time for strategic planning.
- Travel to designated healthcare facilities as required.
- A valid Class 5 Manitoba driver’s license and access to a personal motor vehicle are required.
- Occasional evening, weekend, or extended hours may be required.
This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
