Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Selkirk Mental Health Centre (SMHC) Security Services is built around a recovery model where building relationships with patients, staff and the public is encouraged.
SMHC is a 252-bed 24-hour facility that provides specialized inpatient mental health and acquired brain injury treatment and rehabilitation services to residents of Manitoba and Nunavut whose challenging needs cannot be met elsewhere in the provincial health care system.
SMHC has five specialized patient programs: Acute, Geriatric, Rehabilitation, Forensic and Acquired Brain Injury that are delivered on a campus-like setting with several buildings located throughout the property, as well as three offsite community group homes located in Selkirk.
SMHC is a facility with over 700 employees who work in a variety of roles. The security officer must have the skills and ability to deal with a variety of situations and interact with employees, patients, public and management. This position will also be required to work weekend shifts and holidays.
The grounds are open and are accessible by individuals from the surrounding community. At times these individuals may pose a risk to patients and staff through their actions, such as videotaping patients, soliciting drugs, providing contraband, or vandalizing the grounds and buildings.
MAIN FUNCTION:
To provide safety and security for approximately 700 staff, 252 patients, families, visitors at Selkirk Mental Health Centre. All duties are carried out on a rotational basis in order to augment the treatment services provided at Selkirk Mental Health Centre (SMHC) to assist patients in their recovery and re-integration into the community. This position demonstrates a commitment to the vision, values, goals and objectives of SMHC, including a strong commitment to patient safety.
The incumbent receives direct supervision from the Manager of Security Services and the Security Shift Supervisor regarding workload, attendance and education sessions. The incumbent works in collaboration with coordinators of patient services (CPS) and the treatment teams.
- Prior security experience preferred.
- Experience providing security services dealing with difficult behaviours.
- Experience with security equipment such as CCTV, radios, card access systems.
- Experience with providing assistance in a crisis/emergency situation.
- Experience working in a healthcare environment, desired.
- Complete high school education, Manitoba Standards, required.
- Diploma from a recognized education facility for Security Officer Training, or a combination of previous experience in law enforcement or a military background.
- Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Must possess a valid Manitoba Security Guard License and/or any future license mandated by Manitoba Justice to perform the duties of a Security Guard.
- Certification through the Canadian General Standards Board and/or Manitoba Security Guard Training Standard.
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
- Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Excellent interpersonal and team building skills.
- Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations in a calm and respectful manner.
- Knowledge of mental health issues, desired.
- Must be able to perform activities that include pre-landing inspections, activation of emergency systems and assisting patient off-loads.
- Demonstrated ability to use a two-way radio is required.
- Ability to interact well with others.
- Ability to retain information which is of a confidential nature.
- Must possess tact and diplomacy.
- Demonstrated ability to use discretion and good judgement.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Mature, professional manner.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Position requires a considerable amount of walking and the physical ability to restrain or evict unauthorized individuals.
- Physically able to perform the duties of the position.
