We are currently seeking a talented individual to join the Khàtìnas.àxh Community School team. The KCS school KCS is moving towards an inclusive Outdoor and Place Based Learning school with strong ties to local First Nation values, traditions, and culturally relevant learning opportunities entwined into the Yukon Curriculum. We are a small Early Kindergarten to grade 12 school looking for people with dynamic skills in classroom management, place based learning, and the ability to work with local First Nation, community stakeholders, and parents/caregivers to provide a holistic approach to learning. This Grade 5/6 teaching position provides opportunities for planning, organization, and communication with the school Based team leaders, education specialists, and community to create unique ways of learning for students. The focus is building students with efficacies in literacy, numeracy, and social responsibility in both the classroom and outdoors.

Essential Qualifications

• Bachelor of Education with specialization in elementary and/ or middle school education;

• Recent experience teaching in an elementary/middle school classroom;

• Experience with place-based teaching

• Experience with formative assessment strategies in emergent literacy, literacy at grade level and foundational numeracy;

• Understanding of, and experience delivering early learning pedagogy is an asset;

• Experience differentiating and adapting teaching, learning and assessment in classrooms with a wide range of abilities;

• Experience integrating self-regulation and social-emotional care practices in the classroom is an asset.

• Experience with integrating land-based learning into all aspects of curriculum

• Experience working with First Nation students and communities is an asset.

The ideal candidate will possess these qualifications, skills, and knowledge, but also demonstrate suitability for the role and organizational culture:

• Demonstrated ability to engage and motivate students in the learning process

• Strong planning and organizational skills

• Ability to incorporate experiential and land based learning into all areas of curriculum

• Willingness to participate as an enthusiastic team member in the total school program

• A keen interest and ability to contribute to overall school goals

• Strong communication skills for working with students, parents, First Nations representatives, other staff members, administration, and consultants

• Willingness to live and participate as a member of a small community

• A knowledge of and sensitivity to the traditions and aspirations of First Nations students and a culturally diverse student population

Conditions of Employment

This is a designated position within the Yukon public service which requires the following condition(s) of employment:

• Successful applicants will be required to undergo a security clearance including vulnerable sector check.

• To be a Teacher in Yukon, you must be certified in another Canadian province/ territory first.

• Yukon First Nations 101 to be completed within one year.
