We are currently seeking a talented individual to join the Selkirk Elementary School team. Selkirk Elementary School is located within the traditional territory of the people of Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. Selkirk Elementary School is a dual track English/French elementary school, Grades K - 7 with a student population of approximately 390 students. Key to Selkirk Elementary School’s philosophy is the incorporation of social emotional learning, developmentally responsive practice, structured literacy practices and strong numeracy programming.

Essential Qualifications

• Bachelor of Education or equivalent with qualifications Grades K to 7;

• Learning Assistance experience serving diverse populations is an asset;

• Understands structured literacy programs and can coach classroom teachers

• Teaching experience working with a multidisciplinary team to develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate plans such as, Individual Education Plans, Student Learning Plans, Behaviour Support Plans, and Safety Plans;

• Fluency in both written and spoken French and English language;

• Recent teaching experience in elementary French Immersion Programming would be an asset

• Post-secondary training in teaching French Immersion and/or second language acquisition would be an asset;

• Knowledge of and willingness to learn about the Neuro-Sequential model on Education is an asset.

• Knowledge and willingness to learn about the Neurolinguistic approach would be an asset.

• Knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations people and a culturally diverse student population.

Desired knowledge, skills, and suitability

The ideal candidate will possess these qualifications, skills, and knowledge, but also demonstrate suitability for the role and organizational culture:

• Knowledge of effective instructional practices in structured literacy and numeracy including the ability to apply assessment for, as and of student learning within an inclusive French Immersion context;

• Ability to provide positive intervention with a developmentally responsive approach including establishment of appropriate teacher/student relationships;

• Effective classroom management, planning, and organization skills;

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills working with students, parents, administration, other staff members, and consultants;

• Ability to support targeted intervention with students by utilizing diagnostic assessments and to develop scaffold interventions based on data;

• Ability to work as a member of a professional team and willingness to participate in the total school program;

Conditions of Employment

This is a designated position within the Yukon public service which requires the following condition(s) of employment:

• Successful applicants will be required to undergo a security clearance including vulnerable sector check.

• To be a Teacher in Yukon, you must be certified in another Canadian province/ territory first.

• Class 5 Drivers License or equivalent

• Yukon First Nations 101 to be completed within one year.

Additional Information

• Relocation may be available.

• Candidates who possess qualifications, skills, and personal attributes that are appropriate for the assignment who do not hold a valid teaching certificate, at request, may be granted a letter of permission as a teacher issued in accordance with the Education

• As English is the administrative language for the Government of Yukon, please submit your cover letter and resume in English.

The desired French proficiency level for this position is Level written and Level oral. Proficiency may be tested as part of the assessment process.
