We are currently seeking a talented teacher to join the Hidden Valley Elementary School team. The HVES school, together with parents and community, the staff at Hidden Valley are committed to focusing on the development of young people who are kind and feel a sense of belonging. Kwata kets'adan ku /Hidden Valley Elementary takes a place-based approach to learning. This means that students spend a significant amount of time learning the curriculum through outdoor, hands-on activities and projects in the forest and natural environment.

Essential Qualifications

• Bachelor of Education

• Post baccalaureate coursework in special education.

• Experience teaching students with special needs including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neuro-diversities.

• Experience using First Peoples ways of Knowing, Doing and Being to support and instruct students.

• Experience in the design and implementation of differentiated programming for diverse needs and various grade levels from kindergarten through grade seven.

• A working knowledge of the creation and implementation of individual education plans and behavioural support plans within a school-based team.

Desired knowledge, skills, and suitability

The ideal candidate will possess these qualifications, skills, and knowledge, but also demonstrate suitability for the role and organizational culture:

• Knowledge and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of the First Nations people of Yukon and a culturally diverse student population.

• Willingness and ability to work as a member of a team and to participate in the total school programs and initiatives.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish trusting relationships and work with students, parents, staff members, consultants, and administrators.

• Ability to adapt curriculum to meet the needs of students with a range of learning styles and abilities and to meet the needs of students with Individual Educational Plans.

• Willingness and experience taking kids on overnight camping trips.

• Effective and respectful classroom management based on a developmental understanding of children’s strengths and needs.

• A strong commitment to the practice of differentiated instruction, UDL, and assessment within the classroom to meet student needs.

• Strong commitment to and proven dedication to support the philosophy, values, and beliefs of the school.

Conditions of Employment

This is a designated position within the Yukon public service which requires the following condition(s) of employment:

• To be a Teacher in Yukon, you must be certified in another Canadian province/ territory first.

• Successful applicants will be required to undergo a security clearance including vulnerable sector check.

• Yukon First Nations 101 to be completed within one year.

Qualified applicants for teacher vacancies shall be hired based Article 49 Teacher Priority Hiring of the Yukon Association of Education Professionals Collective Agreement.
