About Us
As part of an alliance agreement Aecon Nuclear has been awarded a contract with Ontario Power Generation to support the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP). Beginning in 2023 Aecon will support the validation phase design, procurement, early site preparation and site mobilization scope for the Construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
The Director Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) will functionally report to the Director EHS - Nuclear Sector, with a project reporting line to the DNNP Project Director. The Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Director will be responsible for the delivery of the project specific Environment and Occupational Health & Safety Plans across DNNP. This will include the promotion of Environment, Health & Safety strategies to all levels of employees.
What is the Opportunity?
- Develops and champions the DNNP strategic direction for environment, health & safety including developing policies, procedures, standards and metrics
- Reports progress on goals & initiatives to DNNP leadership team
- Tracks key EH&S metrics and proactively presents recommendations and, accident/incident information to DNNP management and operations as required
- Liaises and builds relationships with partners, industry experts, and vendors as appropriate
- Actively participates in the development EH&S plans to ensure AECON standards are maintained in consistent structure project environments
- Ensures policies, procedures, manuals and standards are communicated to all project employees, drives alignment of practice across all businesses
- Leads alongside the on-boarding and training team all EH&S training initiatives as required
- Handles executive level escalation of critical incidents or issues to ensure appropriate resolution
- Leads a team of EH&S professionals engaged in project execution
- Ensures emergency/ crisis procedures are established and followed
- Ensures accidents or incidents are reported to appropriate stakeholders and legislative body/committee as required
- Participates in DNNPs crisis management planning to ensure all projects and facilities are adequately prepared for disaster situations
- Participates in various DNNP management, client and EH&S committees
- Identifies specific environmental risks and provides mitigation recommendations when possible
- Liaises with various governmental agencies and community stakeholders, consultants, contractors, Shareholders, etc.
- Responsible for DNNP Environment, Health & Safety budgeting and monitors budgets throughout the year
- Experience and understanding of the Nuclear Industry, including requirements of both Owners and Contractors.
- Experience of working in a live nuclear environment
- History and reputation of Strong client relationships
- Must be knowledgeable of INPO (Institute of Nuclear Power Operation) practices and principles and practice same
- Experience with labour relations and managing critical union stakeholders
- Recruit and hire EHS team members
- Provide supervision and leadership to EHS team including day to day task assignment, overseeing work to ensure timely completion and meeting expectations for quality
- Work with Direct Reports to develop individual career development plans
- Experience working for a Nuclear Generating Station in an Operations capacity May be an asset
What You Bring to the Table:
- Demonstrated successful experience leading a progressive EH&S organization in a project-based environment.
- Experience in Nuclear environment preferred
- Relevant bachelors degree and CRSP designation
- Understanding of implementation complexities within a large Joint Venture and contractor/union network
- Excellent communication skills as well as experience with public speaking and government relations
- Ability to work effectively with other departments to identify and create solutions that are conducive to continue projects/operations efficiently while mitigating organizational risk
- Able to travel between different office and field locations
- Comfortable working in confined spaces and/or working at heights if required
- In-depth experience and knowledge of WSIB legislation, policies, practices, and nuances
