An exciting leadership opportunity awaits you at Alberta Hospital Edmonton’s Unit 8-1A. The primary focus for patients on Unit 8-1A are rehabilitation, skills building and community living preparation. Unit 8-1A assists patients with symptom management, socialization and living skills to support an enhanced level of independence for community living. Reporting to the Unit Manager, we are currently seeking an Assistant Head Nurse who will provide leadership of the team ensuring all components are aligned with the unit and zone operational plan, goals and initiatives. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating the promotion of positive work culture, psychologically safe and welcoming work environments, communication, collaboration, relationship building, with client centered care and rapport building. The AHN will be responsible for identifying and resolving staff issues to maintain a positive and productive work environment. The successful AHN will bring team building, mentoring/coaching, and leadership skills with an engaging and positive energy. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. Duties include planning and organizing day-to-day operations, coordination and monitoring of unit activities, supporting the supervision of nursing and support staff and assisting with recruitment. The Assistant Head Nurse also performs nursing duties on the unit as needed and oversees patient admission and discharge planning in collaboration with the Unit Psychiatrist. This position acts as a liaison between multiple disciplines on Unit 8-1A, psychiatry, and relevant internal and external stakeholders. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA). Minimum 5 years of psychiatric nursing practice within an acute, inpatient setting is required with at least two years of progressive nursing leadership experience. Working knowledge of relevant legislation including the Alberta Mental Health Act, Public Health Act and the Health Information Act. Ability to function independently as well as on a team. Ability to organize time and resources effectively. Demonstrates sound problem solving and decision-making skills. High level of initiative and accountability. Evidence of ability to make sound judgements. Evidence of strong communication & interpersonal skills. Training in Connect Care.
Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred or equivalent experience. Preference given to candidates with experience in Adult Addiction/ Mental Health nursing role.
