The Children’s Hospice and Palliative Service (CHAPS), affiliated with the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH), is an 11 bed, stand-alone, children’s hospice in Calgary, Alberta, that services the Calgary Zone and South/Central Zones. The nursing staff is a combination of 12-hour RN shifts, and 12-hour and 8-hour HCA shifts, as well as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Support Nurse, and Clinical Nurse Educator. Patients referred and accepted to CHAPS have a life limiting illness and are not expected to survive beyond 19 years of age. These patients often have medical complexities of various etiology. CHAPS provides multidisciplinary, palliative care services at the ACH, in the community, and at the Rotary Flames House (hospice) which includes Family Support including Respite Care, Symptom Management, and End-of-Life Care. Managing this team requires excellent skills in the following areas: critical thinking, communication, teamwork, prioritization, time management, advocacy, professionalism, and diplomacy. The Unit Manager is responsible and accountable for providing direction, team leadership, decision-making and organization of the activities related to CHAPS, as well as ACH activities. All activities are in support of the vision, mission and business plans of Alberta Health Services and goals across the Child Health portfolio. The Unit Manager facilitates Connect Care optimization and data collection for CHAPS reporting metrics. The Unit Manager is responsible for facilitating change management and quality improvement in a fiscally accountable manner. The Unit Manager is responsible for, but not limited to, clinical supervision, recruitment, coordinating staffing, team development, performance management/appraisals for staff, and collaborating with the Calgary Flames Foundation and Rotary Club through the ACH Foundation.

Graduation from a recognized Bachelor Level Degree nursing education program. Active registration and practice permit with CRNA. Minimum 3 years’ experience within the past 5 years of acute pediatric nursing. Minimum 3 years’ experience within the past 5 years in a management and/or leadership position within health care.

Pediatric Palliative Care experience. Palliative Care experience. Excellent computer skills (Microsoft o/s, ESP, RMS, Oracle, WBT, RLS, WHS, Excel, etc.). Demonstrated effective communicator with strong organizational skills, influential skills, patient-family focus and commitment to providing quality services. Excellent analytical, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Ability to coach, teach, inspire and build confidence in others. Demonstrated ability to manage change and function in dynamic situations. Ability to foster a climate of cooperation and collaboration and to build relationships. Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills. Demonstrated clear pattern of professional development. Self-directed and highly motivated.

Degree in Nursing, or Equivalent. Completion of 6 Leadership related courses in the past 3 years. Previous human, financial, and physical resource management experience in a leadership position in AHS. Previous experience in leading/supporting quality improvements projects. Knowledge of the principles of rotation management/ rotation optimization.
