The University of Alberta hospital is a quaternary and tertiary referral hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. A leader in surgical research since the 1950s. Since 2021, the University of Alberta Hospital admitted between 2800 to 3000 cases of adult general surgery patients annually. The General Surgery Nurse Practitioner (GS NP) is an advanced practice nursing (APN) role that will offer you the opportunity to integrate clinical skills to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to promote excellence in spinal care clinical practice. Utilizing your comprehensive knowledge base and excellent ability to work autonomously, you will develop cohesive care plans for general surgery and hepatobiliary patients. This will underpin your clinical decision making to support safe and timely patient flow. As a Nurse Practitioner (NP), you will provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan. You will be responsible for integrating clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to manage and meet the health needs of patients. Additionally, you will utilize advanced practice nursing competencies related to Clinical Practice, Leadership and Optimizing Health Systems, Education, and Research to increase care quality, promote appropriate use of health services, and inform and influence healthcare systems. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program, with a minimum of a Master's degree. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) on the Nurse Practitioner Registrar, including Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licensure. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

The successful candidate must have: Completed graduation from a Canadian Nursing education program (or recognized equivalent). Completed master’s degree in nursing with a focus on Advanced Clinical Practice. Current licensure and registration with the College of Registered Nurses Alberta (CRNA) in the Nurse Practitioner Adult Stream. A minimum of 5 years (full time) of related experience as a registered nurse in acute care, and 1-2 years as a NP. Basic Cardiac Life Support Health Care Provider certification. Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills. ACLS and TNCC would be an asset. Experience working with general surgical and hepatobiliary patient population will be an asset. Working knowledge of Connect Care and Alberta NetCare. Make patient rounds as appropriate and monitor ongoing care, providing first line care in emergencies. Diagnose and Order appropriate screening diagnostic investigations; interpret reports of investigations and analyze information to monitor progress and plan treatment. Prescribe drugs within the statutory and regulatory standards, limits and conditions for Nurse Practitioners and within applicable employer policies and procedures. The NP will prescribe, manage, and titrate medications inclusive of opioids as required as part of the perioperative care. Prescribe for and manage perioperative conditions within scope.

Provide follow-up treatment; communicate with clients/families about health findings, diagnoses, and prognoses; support & counsel clients in their personal responses to diseases, disorders, and conditions. Provide transition support into adult care system. Collaborate/consult with general surgery surgeons, anesthesia, residents and specialists and communicate care plans with the health care team. Accept/make referrals from, physicians and other health professionals.
