The University of Alberta hospital is a quaternary and tertiary referral hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. A leader in surgical research since the 1950s, we are a Canada Accredited Trauma Service and Northern Alberta’s only level one trauma site with a catchment of over 2.5 million people. In 2023, our trauma team treated over 650 severely injured patients, including spinal injuries. The Spine Nurse Practitioner (Spine NP) is an advanced practice nursing (APN) role that will offer you the opportunity to integrate clinical skills to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to promote excellence in spinal care clinical practice. Utilizing your comprehensive knowledge base and excellent ability to work autonomously, you will develop cohesive care plans for spine patients. This will underpin your clinical decision making to support safe and timely patient flow. As a Nurse Practitioner (NP), you will provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan. You will be responsible for integrating clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to manage and meet the health needs of patients. Additionally, you will utilize advanced practice nursing competencies related to Clinical Practice, Leadership and Optimizing Health Systems, Education, and Research to increase care quality, promote appropriate use of health services, and inform and influence healthcare systems. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program and a minimum of master's degree. Registration with CRNA on the Nurse Practitioner Registrar including Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licensure. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Provide direct medical coverage. Functions with autonomy/authority with day-to-day clinical care responsibility across the Spine Program. Establish management priorities of spinal health conditions; follow-up treatment/ communicate with patients/families on health findings, diagnoses/prognoses; support/counsel patient in their personal responses to diseases/disorders, and conditions. Monitor clinical outcomes for efficacy. Provide transition support into adult care system as required. Collaborate and/or consult with surgeons, anesthesia, and other specialists according to the complexity of care. Accept/make referrals from/to physicians and other health professionals. Diagnose/treat diseases, illnesses, and conditions within scope. This will focus on perioperative related issues. Apply knowledge of pharmacology and evidence-based practice in selecting/prescribing/administering and monitoring the effects of drugs to treat diseases disorders, conditions, or injuries within scope. Prescribe/manage and titrate medications inclusive of opioids as required as part of the perioperative care. Manage perioperative conditions within scope. Exercise leadership role in utilizing best practice. Expected to participate in program development, evaluation, research and clinical teaching activities. Perform required/applicable medical procedures including advanced medical procedures and interventions within scope.

Certification by the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) assessment an asset. Experience working with spine patient population an asset. ACLS and TNCC would be an asset. Working knowledge of Connect Care and Alberta NetCare.
