The University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually. The UAH and Stollery Children’s Emergency Department is a busy tertiary care level I emergency department and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This large tertiary Trauma Centre provides opportunities in a broad base of emergency nursing from Pediatrics to Trauma Care. Orthopedic Technician works within the Emergency department work in a state-of-the-art facility utilizing an electronic tracking system, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for emergency patients. The incumbent applies, adjusts, and removes casts, splints and traction equipment utilized in the care of orthopedic patients. Decisions are made in a collaborative multidisciplinary health care team environment. In this role, you will be required to work in all areas of Emergency or in an LPN assignment at the discretion of the Unit Manager/Charge Nurse. Working with us is about making a difference. As an Orthopaedic Technician (Ortho Tech), you will apply, adjust, and remove casts, splints and traction equipment utilized in the care of orthopaedic patients (clients, residents). You will observe, monitor, report and document changes in the patient's physical, mental and emotional state, while providing safe and effective, quality care. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Completion of an accredited specialty Orthopaedic Technician program. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Preference will be given to applicants with recent nursing experience in a tertiary care facility Emergency Department. Preference will also be given to those candidates who possess recent acute/critical care experience in the last two years. Graduation from a recognized Orthopedic Technician Course Responsible to provide proof of active registration with the CLPNA and to maintain registration throughout the duration of employment. Current Basic Life Support (BLS - Heart and Stroke AED Level C Required) - Healthcare Provider Registration. 2 years applicable med/surg experience may be considered. In this position, you will be on your feet for an extended period of time (both walking and standing), and you must be able to assist in transporting, lifting and positioning of patients. You will also be required to bend, lift, push, and pull equipment.

Minimum 1 year emergency nursing experience. Demonstrated excellent assessment, organizational and patient care skills required. Ability to communicate findings in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Must be able to identify own learning needs and seek guidance in professional practice where knowledge deficits occur.
