The Senior Advisor, Employee Wellness role is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the mental health and wellness of paramedics and emergency communications officers. Public safety personnel (PSP), including EMS paramedics and emergency communications officers, face unique challenges in their work, often encountering high levels of stress and risk for mental health-related injuries such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and suicide. The need for effective, employer-led mental health initiatives is urgent, and this role is key to driving that change. As part of the EMS Employee Wellness program, you'll work closely with a dedicated team to align with AHS’ strategic objectives to foster a safe, healthy, and supportive workplace. This program aligns with the AHS Position Statement on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, demonstrating our commitment to the wellness of our employees. In this critical role, you will: Develop, operationalize, and evaluate evidence-based and best-practice wellness initiatives that support the mental health of EMS employees, ensuring alignment with AHS’s goals. Partner with internal and external stakeholders on initiatives to improve and expand mental health supports for the EMS workforce. Conduct needs assessment on the type of mental health and wellness supports desired by EMS staff. The Senior Advisor will report to the Program Manager, EMS Employee Wellness, and be instrumental in achieving our EMS Employee Wellness programming initiatives, ensuring that our workforce feels valued, supported, and empowered.
The Employee Wellness Senior Advisor will play a key role in supporting EMS Mental Health initiatives, utilizing a high level of clinical and subject matter expertise, decision-making, autonomy, complex problem-solving, change management, internal communication skills, and stakeholder engagement competency to modify or create solutions for EMS. This position involves developing and executing programs and training focused on supporting the mental health and well-being of EMS staff. You will lead the development, operationalization, and evaluation of mental health initiatives for EMS while conducting needs assessments to identify gaps in mental health support. Collaboration with internal and external partners will be essential to analyze trends and implement evidence-based initiatives. Additionally, you will analyze data and trends to evaluate initiative effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement that are evidence and best-practice informed. Staying informed on national trends and best practices, you will conduct environmental scans and lead the design and delivery of communication strategies to raise awareness of available mental health supports. Your expertise will be critical in advancing EMS mental health initiatives, ensuring the psychological well-being of EMS staff is prioritized through comprehensive, results-driven initiatives.
Master’s degree in a related field (social work, psychology, sociology, mental health & wellness, business administration). Registered with the applicable professional association or college. Training or experience in trauma-informed practices. Prosci/change management certification. Project management training/certification. Minimum of five (5) years experience managing large-scale projects and initiatives impacting multiple stakeholders. Minimum of five (5) years working in psychological health and wellness, with experience identifying and effectively communicating recommendations, risks, and potential outcomes to leadership.
Knowledge of the mental health challenges and organizational dynamics facing public safety personnel. Demonstrated achievement in program development and implementation, particularly in a public safety personnel or healthcare organization. Strong project management skills, including the ability to plan, execute, and monitor projects effectively. Experience in designing and executing training programs. Experience with curriculum development, procedure development, project management, communities of practice, and quality improvement. Experience integrating research and evidence informed best-practices into program development. Demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues.
Knowledge of research and resources available to support the psychological wellbeing of public safety personnel. Advanced communication, facilitation and negotiation skills. Experience creating digital media to support education/training programs. Ability to quickly adapt and change strategies in response to emerging needs/issues.
