Description
The Service Worker I is an exciting role within the multidisciplinary team for Alberta Kidney Care Program (AKC) - EDM Zone. Under the direction of the nursing staff, the Service Worker contributes to safe patient care and the efficiency of the Unit. The Service Worker provides assistance in setting up, rinsing, stripping and the maintenance of the hemodialysis machines under the supervision of a nurse. The Service Worker also transports patients, assists with weighing patients, ensures patient comfort and delivers specimens throughout the Hospital. The Service Worker maintains, cleans and handles hospital equipment pertaining to the Unit, as well as keeps supplies and linens ordered, stocked, and organized. The AKC program requires candidates to complete/pass Service Worker Hemodialysis Training. Candidates must be able to attend training following a successful interview. Hemodialysis Training is held in one of the EDM Zone AKC sites and Red Deer depending on availability. Hemodialysis Training is an intensive 3-week schedule consisting of two parts; Classroom Training followed by a Midterm. A passing mark of 75% is required to move onto Buddy Shifts. Buddy Shifts are scheduled by the Unit Manager (2 weeks). A satisfactory performance is required during Buddy Shifts to be considered a pass. Position may flex within the Edmonton Zone, Alberta Kidney Care sites, University of Alberta Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Edmonton General Hospital & Grey Nuns Hospital.
As a Service Worker I, you will be responsible for transporting patients (clients/residents) and equipment to and from different patient care areas within a hospital site. You will distribute and replenish hospital supplies throughout the units and clean equipment and patient care areas as directed. You may also transport lab specimens, blood and blood products, and patient charts. You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required.
Grade 12 or equivalent.
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. High School Diploma Must be able to lift minimum of 40 lbs. (18kg). Demonstrated good communication skills. High degree of motivation and organizational skills. Ability to work under supervision and independently. Ability to work in an actively paced area and adapts to frequent interruptions in activity. In this two-part training process, you will be required to attend 5 days of training and pass a written test prior to moving onto the second phase or training which includes two weeks set of buddy shifts. Only upon successful completion based on educator assessments will the candidate move on with the program. This position requires the ability to wear a N95. Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment, involving constant walking, bending, and heavy lifting.
Previous training and/ or experience transporting patients in a health care institution is an asset. Supply chain management experience. Customer Service experience. Patient Handling or It’s Your Move training.
