Undergraduate Nurse - Perioperative

Under supervision of a Registered Nurse, performs activities related to patient care in the Operating Room, to ensure the smooth running of the Unit. These activities include but are not limited to assisting with positioning patients, getting equipment required to run cases in the OR, assisting within prepping. Strong attention to detail an asset as the Operative Room has a strict policy around sterile technique. Positioning and transfer of patients: Assists the surgical team (surgeon, anesthetist, OR nurse) to transfer and position patients on the OR table and/or patient bed as required for surgical procedure. Prepares theatre and equipment prior to surgery: Delivers and sets up all equipment, positioning devices and accessory supplies required for each surgical procedure. Responds to ad hoc requests for needed/unanticipated equipment/supplies as required (including blood products/specimens/crash cart) for all booked and emergency procedure.

The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.

Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.

Currently registered in a Nursing Program, having finished 3rd year. Demonstrated ability to lift and hold >25 kg. Demonstrated ability to move heavy equipment. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all disciplines.

Basic computer skills are an asset. Job shadow in the Operating Room. Ability to collaborate with in the expectations of a highly complex and integrated team. Ability to perform consistently in a highly organized, rapidly moving and complex environment. Demonstrated communication skills promoting respect and team spirit.
