Job Summary

Contribute to the administration of justice in a legal environment

The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) contributes to the protection of society by preparing for and conducting prosecutions diligently and fairly, and by striving to develop the most effective methods to administer justice in the Province. The BCPS prosecutes offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statutes in the Provincial, Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada. The BCPS provides legal advice to government and police on criminal law matters and develops policies and procedures on issues relating to the prosecution of criminal justice. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General (ADAG) is responsible for the administration of the BCPS, which is divided into Office of the ADAG, Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions (CASP) and five regions which are headed by a Regional Crown Counsel

This role will coordinate functions including office administration, financial, human resources, senior legal assistant/legal research, special projects, information technology, training, leave management; records management, facilities; and provide legal support services to Crown Counsel including redaction services (at the entry, advanced or senior level/special assignment level) for the purpose of disclosure to Defence Counsel. Job Requirements:

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent; AND
  • Successful completion of a recognized Legal Assistant, Paralegal or Business Diploma; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and related experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working as a Legal Assistant or equivalent.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience leading teams, virtual teams, or supervising staff, including but not limited to allocating work and assessing employee performance.
  • Experience in continuous learning, such as, studying directives, manuals, and training up-dates provided by central agencies.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience training managerial and/or non-managerial staff in administrative and legal procedures and practices.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience operating computer software (e.g. Microsoft Office [MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint], Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, database applications).
  • Experience extracting data and producing reports using a computerized system (or in a computerized environment).


Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • 3 or more years of recent experience working as a Legal Assistant or equivalent.
  • 1 or more years of experience leading teams, virtual teams, or supervising staff, including but not limited to allocating work and assessing employee performance.
  • Experience working within a Crown Counsel office.
  • Recent experience (within the last 5 years) working as a Legal Assistant or equivalent.
