BLU E WATER DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR A PERMANENT OUTDOOR EDUCATION SPECIALIST

The Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre (BOEC) is the outdoor education facility that serves the students of Bluewater District School Board. The BOEC provides opportunities for students to connect with nature and learn outdoor skills in accordance with the Ontario curriculum.

Permanent Vacancy:

One (1) permanent part-time (0.6 FTE) Outdoor Education Specialist required.

Location: Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre (South Bruce Peninsula)

Schedule: Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

Supervisor: Deborah Diebel, Site Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

Facilitation of curriculum-driven inquiry based outdoor programs for students

Development of virtual classroom resources for teachers

Site work

Leadership of meals and overnight duties

Other duties may be assumed as required by the Site Manager

Qualifications and Experience:

Post-secondary education (Environmental Science/Studies, Biology, Ecology, Outdoor Education/Recreation, Outdoor Education AQs, Forest School Canada certification …or related fields of study)

Experience developing and facilitating nature- and inquiry-based curriculum for children in an outdoor setting

Demonstrated interest in and experience as a naturalist; knowledge of the natural history of the region

Current First Aid/CPR Certification, O.R.C.K.A Basic Instructor and Trip Leader 2 Certification or equivalent, National Lifeguard Certificate

Command of the computer technology required for effective social media and virtual classroom development

Assets:

Additional related qualifications (N.L. Waterfront, Wilderness First Aid, C.A.N.S.I. Ski Instructor, GPS Green Check Certification, Safe Hiker)

Experience with Coyote Guide Core Routines, Art of Mentoring, or complimentary programs (Bushcraft skills and experience: Tracking, wilderness survival, traditional crafts, botany)

Experience and certification pertaining to low-ropes course and/or team building facilitation

Demonstrated leadership, communication and interpersonal skills

Creativity and the flexibility to move fluidly from leadership of children in the natural world to a digital format/virtual classroom
