Job Summary 

The Garage Supervisor, Intermodal Maintenance (IM) is responsible for the management of maintenance operations of IM equipment for multiple terminals. The incumbent drives continuous improvement to maximize IM equipment uptime, controlling costs, meeting reliability targets, and ensuring safe execution of all activities, while complying with CN’s policies and regulatory requirements. 

Main Responsibilities 

Lead Maintenance Operations Excellence

Lead maintenance teams such as unionized Mechanics and repair vendors, collaborating with the IM Terminals, Canadian National Trucking Limited (CNTL), and Customer Service to maximize equipment availability and reliability  Implement process improvements to reduce waste and cost in processes and improve productivity, as well as machine uptime  Review labor capacity planning and source additional repair capacity from outside repair vendors, leveraging Procurement and Supply Management teams  Upskill workforce to maintain Smart Terminal Telematics and ensure that the system is performing efficiently to improve terminal productivity  Monitor vendor performance and ensure Key Performance Indicators (KPI) are met  Communicate with Original Equipment Manufactures (OEM) to review root cause failure analysis and corrective methods to effectively place the equipment back in service    Optimize spare parts inventory and establish guidelines for target stock levels to meet equipment availability targets  Handle personnel management, including training and development, apprentice programs, staffing, coaching, incidents, and grievances      Respond to grievances and work to resolve issues where appropriate and practical as stipulated in the collective agreement  Ensure CN’s repair facilities within the region meet operational KPIs and are compliant with safety and environmental guidelines     Drive KPIs within the terminal to ensure all equipment are within downtime and reliability targets, which are reviewed weekly and monthly 

Lead Safety and Compliance 

Ensure compliance with safety, accident prevention, environmental, National Safety Code, Canada Labor Code, and respective provincial fleet safety standards   Drive safety discussions and programs across the IM repair facilities to recognize expected behavior, taking over reprehension of less desired behavior, identifying any potential safety hazards, and addressing them  Coach and train the Company’s unionized and contractor Mechanics on correct safety behaviour  Ensure proper reporting of equipment failures, associated investigations with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and adequate corrections to mitigate similar events  Ensure contractors are part of safety engagements and related discussions  Conduct accident reviews, incidents, and failed inspections concerning terminal group weekly 

Cost Control and Budgets

Oversee the terminal’s IM equipment annual maintenance budget   Ensure repair activities are performed at the lowest marginal operating cost   Ensure the Smart Terminal hardware is maintained efficiently to maximize its productivity gain   Develop strategies to address costly items  Identify opportunities to improve Repair Technicians and shop productivity  Contribute to yearly budget review and provide comments and ideas for capital projects  Reduce non-productive time for equipment repairs  Ensure Equipment Mean-Time-To-Repair is tracked to optimize asset count and utilization 

Drive Continuous Improvement

Recommend improvements to repair processes as well as current inventory procedures for IM equipment  Improve equipment reliability by accessing unplanned breakdowns and making necessary corrections   Leverage technology to improve capacity, throughput, service, and visibility in the supply chain with the Company’s partners  Recommend and support implementation of digital accelerators to improve processes    Leverage chassis tracking system to improve vendor management and equipment utilization  Identify opportunities to decarbonize IM equipment and lead pilot projects 

Working Conditions 

The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires being available on call 24/7 to respond to incidents and minimal travel (up to 30%) to other terminals on the network. 

Requirements 

Experience 

Fleet Management 

Minimum 5 years of experience in a technical role pertaining to fleet management of equipment in the transportation industry or heavy industrial environment 

Education/Certification/Designation 

Technical College Diploma in Heavy-Duty Equipment   Valid Driver’s License  Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional*  

*Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Knowledge of IM fleet maintenance and reliability  Knowledge of Vendor Performance Management   Knowledge of budgeting and cost control   Knowledge of Health and Safety (H&S)best practices  Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis and Failure Mode Effect Analysis  Knowledge of federal, provincial, state, and local IM equipment regulations for respective jurisdictions   Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)  Fluently bilingual both written and verbal (English, French)*
